Emmett Till / Trayvon Martin - An Awakening to Racist Evil in America

This is how we will lose our freedom, by thinking that only a certain class of people are capable of watching over us. it's so wrongheaded that it could only be thought of by those who fear their fellow man.

I have no problem with you doing whatever you want with your freedom .. but this ain't about 'our' .. it ain't about 'we.'

Republicans and the right want this war .. now they have it.

That's the organizing that must take place.

That ... and this ..

Angered By Zimmerman Verdict, Some Call for a Boycott of Florida Businesses

The acquittal of George Zimmerman in the 2012 killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin kicked off protests around the country, as well as calls for a boycott of Florida—where the trial took place, and where a controversial “Stand Your Ground” law still exists.

Since the six-woman jury acquitted Zimmerman over the weekend, a petition has been floated at MoveOn.org to boycott Florida tourism, and various Facebook pages have been created (Boycott Florida, Boycott Florida Economy), one featuring a photo of Mickey Mouse and the words “Just Say No.” At Twitter the #BoycottFlorida hashtag has been getting plenty of action.

People who are upset with the Zimmerman verdict have even been voicing their anger at the official Visit Florida Facebook page. “I really LOVE vacationing in Florida, but I cannot, in good conscience, take my kids to Florida, or visit Florida again ever!!” reads a statement from one commenter, responding to a contest to win a vacation in Key West.

Florida is HEAVILY dependent on tourism.

So they are going to boycott Florida because they don't like the outcome of one case where the prosecution sucked? yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Punish everyone in Florida for that. Great call. Totally logical. But to each their own.

I think they are going to boycott Florida and other Stand Your Ground States because they don't like the law, not because they don't like this jury's verdict.

It's a weird week where I agree w/ you this much, but that was my first thought as well.

Boycotts generally suck anyway, unless they are very specific in who they target. To take this out on the business owners of FL is just imbecilic.

I've been against this Stand Your Ground law since well before we ever heard of George Zimmerman.

And if Jeb Bush gets the Republican Nomination you can bet it will be a huge issue in the next presidential election.

Well that is because normally you are a moronic liberal... now that you have shown your true colors as a rational human being, well you just swell and stuff.

Brown brought up the case of Marissa Alexander, a 31-year-old Jacksonville woman who invoked Florida’s Stand Your Ground law when she fired a warning shot into the wall to ward off her abusive husband.

“Marissa Alexander has a master’s degree. Never had any trouble with the law, and the case shows that she was abused, beaten, put in the hospital, pregnant with a baby of her husband at the time. She shot a warning shot. She was overcharged and got 20 years,” the congresswoman said.

“Let me just say that the criminal justice system is not working for the people that I represent. It’s not working — not just blacks, but poor people. Something needs to happen. And you can’t not just expect the president or the Congress person, but you’ve got to arm yourself. You’ve got to be registered. You’ve got to vote that ballot. You’ve got to vote for the attorney general, the judges. I mean, everybody has to do their part, because this is unacceptable.”

Brown said when she talks with her colleagues, “and I talk to different groups and organizations around the country, it’s hard for them to believe that a person could actually get 20 years for firing a warning shot and no one got hurt, but yet, in Sanford, you kill a youth, and yet, you know, not guilty.”

Angela Corey was the state attorney who oversaw the case against Alexander, as well as the one who brought the charges against Zimmerman.

“I’m not comparing, but there’s something wrong with the system, and we need to double-down and change the law, that’s the state legislators. We need judges to give them more discretion. I mean, we need to deal with the criminal justice system. And let me just say one thing, as a mother, we tell our children, do not talk to strangers. And we work with them to talk with the police force, but George Zimmerman was not a police officer. He had no business saying anything to that young man. None whatsoever.”

The ballot box .. where this fight will really be fought.

Thanks BAC. I know Corinne Brown personally and although there's lots of bad blood between us (I had to testify against her) her support of this case deserves applause. I believe we've talkd about it here before.

And the comments about Angela Corey further underscore my previous post. This whole trial was a set up.

Of course you don't. Why would it be wrong to economically hurt many people who likely agree that the law sucks?

The Montgomery Bus Boycotts hurt a lot of people who were not racist, but it accomplished the goal and sparked the broader civil rights movement. Economic pressure is one of the few things that effects social change in this country anymore.

So they take it out on business owners? On that point BAC was right (along with some of the authors he posted)... you take it out on the politicians at the ballot box. You don't take it out on business owners. You hurt the very people you are trying to protect and don't affect those that have the power to change the law... at least not directly.

It's actually not moronic. See, okay, sit down guys, this is going to be tough. Put on your concentration faces.

Lawmakers actually draft and pass laws. For instance, in Arizona, lawmakers passed the papers please law. And in the SYG states, guess what again? Yep, lawmakers!

Okay, now, guess how lawmakers get to make laws in the first place? Are you concentrating? They're elected! Yep!

Guess by whom? The residents of the state! So a majority of the residents voted for them, effectively voting for these laws.

This means a majority of the residents support those laws. How do we get them to change their minds?

Did someone say "is it economic pressure Darla?!" Because, that's right boys!

So you see, it's not mindless retaliation against the wrong targets.

Have a good night fellas! :)

Think South Africa.

Florida is pretty close.
