Why Does A Northeastern Yankee like Myself Hold Such A Strong Bond With The South?

The soldiers in butternut and gray ( with the majority, Scots Irish) fought for the American people,

the soldiers in blue fought for the federal government.

All of the American people lived up North, in America. Therefore, the morons in gray could not have possibly fought for the American people. The real Irish folk, living in places like NYC, Boston (aka the city where the American Revolution started), and Philly, fought for America.

Wrong. Scot-Irish highlanders didn't own slaves and detested the English descendents who did. The English slave trade started with Irish slaves in the 17th century before they used Africans; that's where the term "redneck" came from, because the fair-skinned Irish didn't fair well in the tropical sun (look it up). The rednecks resisted the call to arms from the politically powerful slave owners, many fought for the Union. Scot-Irish were instrumental in the Underground Railroad.

If you're going to claim brotherhood with us Southerners you need to read history books written by Southerners, not northern liberals.

What are you talking about?

Scots Irish Yankees fought for the federal government, Scots Irish confederates fought for the American people.

I don't know where you got slavery out of that.

Who me? Yes sir, life long.
You always have had trouble adapting to change! :p

You need to spend some time in the Mississippi Delta or the south central valley in Texas or the Carolina midland or west Alabama. A year in any one of those locations and I'd bet you'd switch to the Democratic party. I was a life long Republican too.....until I lived in the south for 7 years. That cured me!

Haha. If I left the Republican Party I would become an independent. I'm not joining another party.

Try living in San Francisco for 15 years, even you would switch back to being a Republican (or at least a non-Democrat).

Lee and Rommel are two of the most overrated general in the history of the world.
Agreed. Tactical geniuses but strategy? Meh not so much. Winning battles don't mean squat when you lose the war. I'd throw in Hannibal in that group too. Genius as a battlefield tactician......but not the greatest strategist to ever come down the pike.

That's a good point.....except I tried the independent thing before I becaome a Republican.....didn't work out so well. Having said that.....the modern Repulbican party has far more problems with extremist than the Dems have. Now forty years ago it was the exact opposite situaiton.

You need to understand your history:
In 1742, a document entitled Thurloe's State Papers, published in London, opined that:

"..It was a measure beneficial to Ireland, which was
thus relieved of a population that might trouble the planters; it
was a benefit to the people removed, which might thus be made
English and Christians ... a great benefit to the West India
sugar planters, who desired men and boys for their bondsmen, and
the women and Irish girls... To solace them."(4)

Note the chilling insouciance of the purpose stated for the women and Irish girls. . to "solace" the sugar planters. Also, to our way of thinking, the Irish were Christians, but to the Protestant English, Catholics were considered Papist, and Papists weren't Christians.

So for the entire 17th Century, from 1600 until 1699, there were many more Irish sold as slaves than Africans. There are records of Irish slaves well into the 18th Century

Why would the Irish fight for the Confederacy?

Before that war, the states had more power than the federal government. After that war, the federal government became an overwhelming centralized power and states rights were destroyed.

You see I do understand my history.

The Yankee soldiers fought for the federal government and the confederates fought for the American people.

And now you understand why the progressives love Lincoln and his war on the southern states .. at least I hope you understand.

If you couldn't put that football shirt on and party with these lefties this weekend, you'd kill yourself, you'd commit suicide.

The most important thing for you is social acceptance with starry eyes for liberals.

I don't disagree with your first paragraph but that's not what is being discussed. Again, Why would the Irish, who the English tried to commit genocide, then enslaved them and raped their women and young girls, fight for their former slave owners who were the political elite in the Confederacy?

Because they understood that they were being invaded by a foreign country.

That's why the upper south states seceded and joined the lower cotton states and joined the confederacy. The upper south states desired to stay in the union and the planters were the ones who pushed for secession, true. But when King Abraham launched his invasion, everything changed. The southerners in the upper south states had relatives in the lower cotton states, it became a family thing.

Dude what you're claiming does not jive with the historical record and to defies common sense. Again, read your history of the Southern mountain counties, where Scot-Irish were forced to settle, being forced out of the rich bottom lands owned by the wealthy English descendents and slavers.

If I had ancestors and relatives who were enslaved I wouldn't be supporting the slave owners. I'd be sneakin' down to the low country, killin' the bastards, burnin' their big houses, and setting their Irish and African slaves free. And that's exactly what happened.

Frankly, I was quite surprised that I was able to post the entirety of Trout Fishing in America a chapter at a time in this dumbass thread before it died. Yet it persists.
This thread is a turd that just won't flush.

That's because you're a faggot who loves to recite poetry as a diversion of censorship.

And you failed.
