Former Gov. Gary Johnson of New Mexico, the Libertarian Party’s presidential candidate in 2012, vows to be active in support of same-sex marriage in Florida.
Late Friday, Johnson announced his Our America Initative would give “full backing and support” to Equality Florida’s efforts to legalize same sex marriage in the Sunshine State.
“Any day now, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue its ruling on gay marriage. Many experts believe, as do I, it is highly likely that the Court will return the issue of marriage rights to the states,” Johnson wrote supporters in an email sent out late Friday. “If and when that happens, we want to be ready to seize on public reaction and immediately begin gathering the signatures to put marriage equality on the ballot in these key states.
“If the Court puts the issue in the hands of individual states, as many expect, ensuring marriage equality will be an undertaking that will require thousands of volunteers and, yes, substantial funding,” continued Johnson. “Surveys show that America is ready to adopt equal marriage...The U.S. Supreme Court could rule on gay marriage as early as Monday. We must be ready to hit the ground running.”
Earlier in the month, Johnson announced his group would help in the fight for same sex marriage in Arizona.
