Brother Shoots & Kills Sister On Her 13th Birthday

still worth it.

why do you liberals even care? it's mostly conservatives offing themselves anyway. You should be happy.

I know, right? It's their young that's doing the killin' too.

Is 'defective' some kind of euphemism for 'what kind of fucking moron cleans a loaded gun?'

no defective operator

the first thing that a trained firearms user learns is, is the firearm that i am holding loaded or unloaded. this is a simple thing to do. treating a firearm as unloaded without checking it is foolish and i think criminal.

Every responsible gun owner is one accident away from being a criminal.

I guess, in this instance, we have to see the silver lining in this tragedy in the fact that the long range prognosis for humanity's gene pool might have improved ever so slightly.

So would say Margaret Sanger regarding abortion and eugenics and race.

not defective, just not properly trained. besides, how do we know it was an accident?

choosing not to raise unwanted children is a form of selection.

oth, there are already too many people on this world and abortions account for only a tiny percentage

remember spontaneous abortions are god's way of saying no to a new life...and there are far more spontaneous abortions than intentional abortions

oh well

how would you suggest that such a design change be made. someone could just pick up a firearm and start cleaning the outside and pull the trigger

I'm not a gun expert; I'll leave that up to the gun companies. But would a trigger lock have stopped this? We don't know exactly how it got fired.

a trigger lock would have prevented the accident as would storage in a gun safe, however, the firearm owner or responsible adult would have to have used either of these protections and neither would involve changing the design of the firearm.

the real problem was that the firearm owner left a loaded firearm in reach of a minor or other unqualified person

ps i am a firearm expert

It's a shame we only find out that people using guns are unqualified when they shoot themselves or others.

Given the number of accidental shootings, I think we have to accept that people will get guns who don't know all the safety tips.

So maybe the gun companies can come up with ways to make them safer - you know, something like "guns for dummies". Put some failsafe stuff in them. Doesn't mean some people won't still do stupid stuff, but maybe some of the mistakes will be avoided.

(reminded of a story I heard ...nurse was giving some kind of nutrition to a patient through a tube...well, the nutrition pack didn't fit into the tube fitting, so she worked very hard to make them fit together. Very creative. Unfortunately, turns out she did NOT pick up a nutrition pack - she picked up something deadly - and the mis-matched tubes were part of the safety system to make sure no one gave the wrong thing to people. Failsafes don't always work, that's for sure)

perhaps a requirement that no one may purchase a firearm without passing a test in its safe and proper use. that would likely pass a constitutional test.

however, there is no protection against stupidity or foolishness.

ps there is a part designed to safe a firearm, it is called a safety and when used properly, a firearm will not fire until it is turned off.

I'm not going to even try going back through all the prior posts here, so there is a chance I could be repeating someone else. If so - sorry about that.

I am envisioning that I have built a new weapon in my back yard. It is a perfect weapon that will absolutely obliterate anyone that dares to step on my property and threaten me and mine. Even better, when I leave home I can stick it in my pant's pocket and be sure that anyone that attacks me will surely die. My weapon is entirely new, being based on Dark Energy and therefore nobody has gotten around to passing any laws against it. Besides, I have a powerful lobby now working to make sure nobody ever does.

My weapon does have some unfortunate side effects. It is much more likely to kill me and those I love as any criminals. And there are no fail safes built into it to keep anyone else from using it, maybe in ways I wish they wouldn't. And I am certainly not required to lock it away or to keep it deactivated until I need it. In fact, I alone get to decide if it is safe and when I can use it. Well, to be entirely honest, one of the unfortunate side effects is that it is a doomsday device and will end all life as we know it. I say that that's true for the person at the other end of any lethal weapon, so why should mine be any different?

HEY, it's my RIGHT to have it because the Constitution says I have the right to own and bear arms. Well, and some other nonsense about a well regulated militia, but I don't care about that part of it.

George (my neighbor) seems to be unhappy about my doomsday device. He pointed out that it could kill him and his family if I ever used it. I told him, "Them's the breaks! Not my problem!" Because my right to own it superseded whatever silly little rights to stay alive he thinks he should have. My wife is a little upset that just because I beat her and the kids up now and then that I am allowed to keep my weapon. Something about being worried I'll use it on her! I won't EVEN get into what my shrink said! She doesn't get that everyone is out to get me - including the government. So, naturally I think it's sure a good thing I can just blow up the world if I ever feel like it.

Now, George (you know - my neighbor) was trying to tell me I could just use a weapon that wasn't QUITE as dangerous and still be safe. SILLY MAN! What if the entire world turns against me? It COULD happen, you know. So, I need a weapon that will take out the whole world. This idea of his that I should be able to get by with some piddly little less lethal weapon or that I need some safe guards on what I can own or use against other people is nonsense. It's my RIGHT, after all! And, of course, the world revolves around me.

a bit of hyperbole...i hope

That's what the NRA used to do. Education.

Nowadays, this is what they teach:

And yes, that is Obama.
