Hold onto your holsters, folks: shooting a cop dead is now legal in the state of Indiana.

Governor Mitch Daniels, a Republican, has authorized changes to a 2006 legislation that legalizes the use of deadly force on a public servant — including an officer of the law — in cases of “unlawful intrusion.” Proponents of both the Second and Fourth Amendments — those that allow for the ownership of firearms and the security against unlawful searches, respectively — are celebrating the update by saying it ensures that residents are protected from authorities that abuse the powers of the badge.

As a fervent liberal, I don't think police officers should be barging into your house for no good reason. But I don't know how well this law is written. If you have defaulted on your mortgage, and a sheriff comes to evict you - can you shoot him/her? i.e. what IS "unlawful intrusion"? If spouse A is beating on spouse B, and spouse B is screaming and the cops - who have been called by neighbors for the fight - come into the house - is that "unlawful"? can they be shot? If they cross my property line - which is several hundred feet away - can I shoot them? Or do they have to actively be threatening me up close? (after all, if a non-cop trespasser crosses my property line, shooting them would be considered - pardon the word - overkill - and I'm pretty sure I'd be thrown in prison)

And in general, I think the police officer job is hard enough without giving people more reasons to shoot them. I would like to say this should be covered under other laws - if anyone, cop or not, enters your house illegally, and you shoot them, it shouldn't matter that it's a cop - but I know cops often get "special privileges" where they don't get punished for things the rest of us would get punished for, so maybe the law is needed.

I would like to think this law is very carefully written and that people will understand it and only shoot cops when it really is an unlawful intrusion...but I'm afraid too many will see it as "open season on cops". Guess we'll see what happens....I imagine the first case will involve some drug dealer who will be acquitted for shooting the cop that bust into the house... but that's of course just my imagination speaking.

probably not, they probably have a right to evict you because it is no longer your house if you dont pay for it.

no because they would have probable cause. Police are allowed to respond and enter homes if they feel they have probable cause and there is an immediate danger or risk being posed.... obviously.

I hope that is the case. If you do not have probable cause and are busting into peoples homes then you can get fucked.
 
It would really make more sense to simply disallow no-knock warrants, than to potentially encourage the slaughter of police officers acting legitimately who some nutjob personally interprets as illegitimate.
