Obama Wants More Tax Money

The cost of flying might be going up, but this time it’s not the airlines raising prices.

The Obama administration has proposed raising the taxes on air travel by about $14 per flight, a move airlines strongly oppose.

Higher taxes are needed to help reduce the deficit, pay for improvements at the nation’s airports, and add thousands of new immigration and customs officers to reduce wait times to process foreign visitors, the administration says.

Airlines say higher taxes will backfire and hurt the economy.

"Our fragile economy and the millions of middle-class Americans who rely on air travel and shipping every day simply cannot afford tax increases that will drive up the cost of flying or limit service options to small communities across the country,” said Nicholas E. Calio, president and chief executive of Airlines for America, the trade group for the nation’s airlines.

Congress
ignored similar hikes proposed by the Obama administration last year. Since then, the airlines themselves raised fares 3%, from an average of $364 in 2011 to $375 last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

But airline industry representatives say there is a difference between a fare hike and a tax increase.

Airlines use fare increases to reinvest in services to passengers — such as buying new planes, said Katie Connell, a spokeswoman for Airlines for America.

"A tax or fee imposed by a third party that keeps the money does nothing for our customers,” she said, adding that most airlines earn an average profit of 37 cents per passenger.

:palm:

Great idea, tax our domestic flights to reduce waiting times to process foreign visitors. but....How about just taxing them to pay for it??

when we had great schools the envy of the world round and Jobs for all what was the top tax rate?

Dude, somebody has to pay for all of those catered lunches when the IRS Commissioner visits the White House to talk about targeting the Tea Party nitwits.

bogus argument, you can't compare the top marginal rate from 1950 to today unless you are going to account for the myriad of taxes paid today that weren't paid in 1950.

Here is a homework assignment for you puddin pop. How many people actually paid that top marginal rate? I will take a percentage or an absolute value. Your choice.

Ready? Go.

Remember back in the day when he said that nobody with less than $250,000 of earning would pay even one dime more of taxes? *sigh* that was the good old days.

Remember when he would lose re-election because you said that the increased sin taxes violated the pledge and it was a "read my lips" moment? Good times.

You mean when I asked "Could this be a read my lips moment?" Yeah, questions are the same things as predictions in DH's imaginary world of Damo. I'm always happy to be the central character in your worldview. I just with so much of it wasn't fiction.

I do remember when his promises are broken it doesn't matter to the toilet sippers...

LOL:

However his promise was that anybody making less than $250K would see no tax increase in any way. This falls well outside that particular promise. It is indeed like a "read my lips no new taxes" moment for Obama if he does strike this pose.

It won't take luck, it will take simply playing the video of the pledge and then showing reality. Kind of like a "read my lips" moment.

Even though he said that he would not for those making less than $250,000? We don't need to protest, it is exactly a "read my lips" moment. It will be awesome. He even just recently reiterated it after the trial balloon where they said he hadn't "ruled it out" and got a negative reaction so quickly that the very next day they denied that was even a possibility.

Totally, Damo.

I wish that we had picked somebody who would have actually done those things... It would have been awesome.

Damo:

The above is a question. What you said about the "read my lips" stuff are not questions.

I hope this helps.

All that were posted was based on the "if" statement in the first post. "If he takes this pose"... You've taken the posts out of that context. I know you like doing that, but it doesn't change the reality. None of those are predictions and all are based on an "if/then" statement that didn't come to fruition.
