The 7 Most Obese U.S. States

Ahhh nutrition.....the last great scientific frontier. Though I do disagree with certain aspects of the paleo diet, their fetish against whole grains for example. The notion that humans did not evolve to digest grains is utter non-sense. Obesity in America has more to do with over eating large quantities of low quality processed foods combined with a sedentary life style than anything else. Large amounts of any one food group in the human diet are unhealthy, particularly if they undergo a lot of processing. The key to a healthy diet is a wide variety of unprocessed "whole" foods in moderate quantities combined with regular physical activity. In that regards I do agree with the paleo diet with it's emphasis on whole unprocessed food.

What the grains do to the gut is nothing short of harmful. Add in the gluten and you have a recipe for a terrible diet.

What the Paleo diet does is remove grain and stick with what out bodies evolved to eat. Grains are a relatively recent addition.

YOu are correct about the low processed foods. But eating meats, veggies, fruits, and nuts instead of having half of our diet consist of processed grains (breads, pastas ect ect) will do more for our health than any whole grain diet.

We ate grains and it's pretty clear our bodies are designed for the same diet of our closest relatives, i.e., fruit, nuts, leaves with a little bit of meat. However, our digestive systems have evolved to deal with agriculture. For instance, we are far more capable of processing dairy now than we were before.

Paleo is just the latest fad diet and part of the marketing of all of them is to shift blame for weight problems onto someone else. Big ag is all about money and they are greedy while the guys selling you books and accessories for your new lifestyle only cares about helping others.

I never claimed the people behind the Paleo diet were there solely for altruistic reasons. I do, however, think their research is sound.

Look up Hardin Village and see an example of two different groups in basically the same area. One is an agricultural based tribe before the arrival of europeans, and the other predates them and were a hunter/gatherer tribe who stayed in that general area for a very long time. The health differences in the two tribes are amazing. http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/...lth-in-agriculturalists-and-hunter-gatherers/

Also, I never said we are incapable of eating and digesting grains. I simply said that we had not evolved to do so. The structure of most grains makes the digestion difficult, often problematic, and actually causes problems in our gut. This is medically documented by several researchers.

And just as an FYI, the Paleo diet was not designed as a weight loss diet. It was first created as an alternative to medical treatments for numerous common ailments. So the idea that it is simply a fad diet or marketing to shift blame is absolutely wrong.

It's now a fad diet being marketed with misinformation concerning early human diets. Whatever you are claiming is the original is not relevant.

Fat is not the only bad thing you can eat. Just because your diet is low in fat does not make it healthy. But high fat diets are still bad and it along with the socioeconomic status are the most likely causes of the higher obesity rates in these states.

We are still evolving. Hominids have been eating grains for a long time, as much as 105,000 years ago, and almost certainly since the paleolithic era. If anything in modern diets is out of the ordinary it is the large amounts of meat.

I am not going to chase down "research" mentioned on a website trying to sell me crap. Where are the peer reviewed studies with repeatable results?

Low fat diets tend to be high carb diets. And that is most certainly bad for you.

If you see the Paleo Diet as a "high fat" diet, you do not understand it. And how is it being marketed with misinformation? The Paleo diet was basically a Hunter/Gatherer diet. It contained meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish ect ect. More importantly, what it did not contain is the grains that the agricultural revolution put in as a staple. I am sure many people are comfortable with the idea that the hunter/gatherer tribes lived short lives of poor health. That is simply not the case. Anthropologists have ample evidence of this. I've worked more than a few digs for paleo era tribes and seen adult skeletons with little or bone deformation, very few cavities in their teeth, and plenty of evidence of very good health.

What exactly were they trying to sell you? I offered a site with evidence provided by a MD on his blog. He isn't selling anything. If you have some evidence that contradicts what he claims, by all means share it.

Or don't read the links and live the way you choose. But don't pretend that everything you disagree with is fad and marketing. That is simply dishonest.

you contradict yourself. If everything is bought and sold by business, then business runs america, not the people.
It is precisely monetary interest that runs america.

sorry to step on your sandcastle

I think he meant it in the sense that most of us wake-up in the morning, and throughout the course of the day, whenever thoughts on government occur, we tend to think of it as government of the people, by the people, and for the people. It's not until a specific issue comes up that we are passionate about or get stuck dealing with that we suddenly break out into the cynical, "dammit, the bankers and CEOs are running this show" attitude.

So you are saying a diet high in carbs from fruits and veggies is bad?

Paleolithic diets did contain grains. I gave you three sources from real journalist referencing the overwhelming proof of that, not some jagoff trying to sell supplements and a book.

Metabosol and his book. That's what the site is for.

No, that is not what I am saying. In fact, the Paleo diet contains a LOT of fruits and veggies. It is NOT an Adkins diet.

Yes, the links you gave me showed some cases of grains in the diets, but not even close to the majority of the diet like is done today. And one of the links spoke to a varied diet, not just being a carnivore. That is exactly what the Paleo diet describes. But at least one of the articles talks about finding evidence of consumption of ferns and cattails. This is not the same as the grassy grains like wheat, corn ect.

Where most diet information goes wrong is the heavy reliance on breads, pastas and other grain based foods. They are rough on our systems, turn into sugar, interfere with processes in our bodies (like the ability to tell you are full) and play havouc with inflammations and our insulin. That is what the Paleo diet is pushing away from. The diet is heavy on veggies, fruits and nuts in addition to meat & fish. And pushes for far less processed foods.

So, since he also sells a supplememt (not mentioned in the article at all), the research he discusses is all marketing? No truth at all?

Since this MD also makes a living in the nutrition market, his comparison of the two tribes is completely useless?

That is ridiculous. If you cannot read an article, and do a little research on your own to determine what is fact and what is not, you really are hopeless. I guess I can see why you wish to write him off as just a "jagoff".

Yet when you eat a diet high in protein low in simple carbs, which is what corn, wheat and white bread and cookies are, you lose weight, cholesterol goes down and BP goes down. The problem in the south is they eat both high amounts of fat containing proteins AND TONS of simple carbs. A combination sure to kill. On another note, in 15 years there will be a population shit again back towards the blue states as people in all these red states die of chronic gravy-itis.

Japanese diet however has been historically full of grain and until the 20th century you would have been hard pressed to find a large number of obese people in Japan.

You claimed low fat diet are usually high in carbs and therefore bad. Fruits and vegetables are mostly carbs. Carbs should provide the plurality or majority of your calories.

Yeah, southerners are not known for pasta. They are known for soaking everything in fat often from animals. They already eat lots of meat and fat.

While I would agree bread and pasta should be limited (who is relying on it) and replaced with complex carbohydrates (including whole grains) the biggest problem is still too much fat and meat. The paleo diet overemphasizes protein and fat. It is hostile to dairy and legumes which have many nutritional benefits and are a great source of protein.
