With Dubai emerging as a major stopover point for long haul journeys, five hundred flights a month will deliver over one million of us to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the next year.

Dubai is being promoted as a luxury high-class paradise in the desert, but the reality is brutally different, as Australian Alicia Gali discovered. Gali took a job in the UAE with one of the world’s biggest hotel chains, Starwood. What happened next makes this story a must-watch for every Australian planning on traveling through the region.

Gali was using her laptop in the hotel’s staff bar when her drink was spiked. She awoke to a nightmare beyond belief: she had been savagely raped by three of her colleagues. Alone and frightened, she took herself to hospital. What Alicia didn’t know is that under the UAE’s strict sharia laws, if the perpetrator does not confess, a rape cannot be convicted without four adult Muslim male witnesses. She was charged with having illicit sex outside marriage, and thrown in a filthy jail cell for eight months.

Nobody will apologist for the Muslims, since the United States has one of the highest per capita instances of rape in the world, far greater than the UAE. Will you apologize for the Christians committing these rapes? Rape is terrible, no matter who commits it.

You seem to be missing the point, do they lock up the victim in the US because of a lack of witnesses?

The treatment of women in many of the middle eastern nations is atrocious. That, in my mind, would be a far better reason for going to war than the inventions of George W. (or the continuations by Obama).

This is not about rape. This is about a rape victim being put in jail.

Do you really think that there is less rape going on in the UAE? Why would any woman report a rape when there is a good chance she could end up in jail? I know for a fact that there are many rapes of Filipinas and Thai women working in Dubai which are covered up. I have been in Dubai airport a few times especially terminal 3 where the Irish Village pub is, Arabs are not supposed to drink yet you will see them in their flowing robes up at the bar drinking beer or spirits!! They are just massive hypocrites for the most part.

Saddam's sons were raping new brides before their "honeymoons" for fun and shooting guests at 'partys' just for the hell of it, and Saddam himself enjoyed throwing his perceived enemy's off roof tops for entertainment among other things....

how the fuck can a women even complain they were raped if they need 3 or 4 male witness to back up the claim....

the UAE is a closed society for all practical purposes while the US "blessed" with every kind of misfit, nut, and criminal, homegrown and from all over the world.

To compare the two is ridiculous.

Yet the majority of rapes in this country never get reported and prosecuted. So we have American women locked away for life in a prison of hell and nobody cwres.

Maybe Howey doesn't believe that they couldn't find witnesses to a rape; seeing as how he was raped in broad daylight and everyone in the bath house saw it.

Nobody cries? Just because it is not on the headlines does NOT mean nobody cries. Just because it is not discussed here daily does not mean nobody tries to help.

Your comments concerning this rape victim being jailed were callous and cruel, and now you are simply trying to cover for that by pretending its not an issue because rapes happen here too.

I don't disagree. I hope you dont think I'm picking on you Howey, it's not you. Liberals mostly seem to take this same stance. It's part of why I avoid these threads. The other part is because it sickens me watching known rape apologists on the right pretending to give a shit about any rape. If you ask me this whole subject is fucked up because you have righties who will be the first to point fingers at sluts in short skirts asking for it in America, but who all of a sudden are grieved over a rape here. How convenient. Then liberals who would rightly go bug fuck nuts if Mississippi jailed a rape victim start minimizing this by diverting to rape stats here. I don't think anyone would say I minimize rape and sex assault in this country. Now let me know when we start jailing or honor killing rape victims.
