Gun crime has plunged in the United States since its peak in the middle of the 1990s, including gun killings, assaults, robberies and other crimes, two new studies of government data show.
Yet few Americans are aware of the dramatic drop, and more than half believe gun crime has risen, according to a newly released survey by the Pew Research Center.
In less than two decades, the gun murder rate has been nearly cut in half. Other gun crimes fell even more sharply, paralleling a broader drop in violent crimes committed with or without guns. Violent crime dropped steeply during the 1990s and has fallen less dramatically since the turn of the millennium.

Despite the remarkable drop in gun crime, only 12% of Americans surveyed said gun crime had declined compared with two decades ago, according to Pew, which surveyed more than 900 adults this spring. Twenty-six percent said it had stayed the same, and 56% thought it had increased.

“It’s hard to know what’s going on there,” said D’Vera Cohn, senior writer at the Pew Research Center. Women, people of color and the elderly were more likely to believe that gun crime was up than men, younger adults or white people. The center plans to examine crime issues more closely later this year.

It's pretty universal.

We have exactly the same problem regarding the perception of crime. Crime figures have been falling for years but there is still the perception that, although crime in their locality is usually not such a concern, on the national scale it is all but out of control.

I don't suppose having a sensationalist media telling everyone, at every opportunity, that they are in immediate danger from guns, knives, weather, cars, other people, hot drinks, cold drinks, terrorists, midgets, sneezing birds and pigs, drugs, rats, and every other animate and inanimate object helps much.
 
I understand the concern demonstrated in the OP... however, if cancer deaths were to start to decline, would that mean we should then stop doing research on curing cancer? Are you all saying that finding a political method to further reduce gun crimes is no longer needed because the incidents of gun crime have gone down measurably in recent years? Fuck worrying about curing cancer... it's gone down some and that's good enough, ain't it?

It's old Kevin Bacon again. 'Everyone knows' someone who has been mugged, robbed, knifed, but that doesn't mean that everyone knows someone different. Everyone knows our Dave but (thankfully) there is only one of him not millions! Everyone knows a welfare scrounger who killed six of his kids but there are not millions of Philpotts.
(Of course if you read the daily Mail you would be told to believe that there were millions of them.)
However as long as gun crime exists it must be fought against (I say shoot em all) and as long as street crime continues it must be punished.
To think that because gun crime stats show a reduction that somehow these mentally challenged pin pricked loonies should be let off the hook is a nonsense.

The fact that people are uninformed is the direct fault of the education policies of successive governments doing the bidding of Daddy Bigbucks. capitalism keeps people dumb. You are a capitalist. You are dumb to say what you have. Point proven.

(If you check Grind, you realize I've been saying this exact same thing - gun deaths are decreasing - for over a year)

Just proof that government propaganda and media alliance can blind the majority of people. Even with the easy access given by internet, google and other search abilities most citizens depend on accepting lies told by our government and echoed by mainstream media. Stalin would be so proud...

And the continuing trend is downward which would indicate, to everyone who isn't a mouth breather, that the current POLICIES on guns are either working, or (and this is fucking crazy I know) that crime has a vastly different set of motivators other than guns. In either case, it effectively dispels the myth that gun control does anything at all.

It has lowered because cops now do their jobs better, and technology just makes our lives easier, and with security cameras being nearly everywhere; nobody could get away with committing a huge crime anymore.
The only scary part is, rampage-style killings are bigger than ever in America, they happen on a monthly basis sadly. This is why we have to be cautious, and protect innocent American lives.
 
The point of the article, and probably of this thread, is the wailing and gnashing of teeth amid claims that guns MUST be controlled and that murder is rampant.

I have pointed out several lies and much misinformation from the anti-gun folks, but it hasn't seemed to matter to those determined to have their way.

the thing is, the problem is already going down, and many of the proposed solutions are made with the perception that things are getting out of control when that couldn't be further from the truth. Additionally, there is no evidence that many of the measures that are proposed would actually work, though they potentially could make things unnecessarily worse.
