Jason Collins

MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN
I really thought this would be a topic, on today's postings; but evidently no one is comfortable discussing it.

Jason Collins became the first active pro-sports player to came out and announce that he is gay.
Good for him.

Others have done so; but only after retiring.

From what I've read, he's received some really positive support.

From the lack of comments (support) that is being shown, on these boards; I can see why so many are afraid to be honest about this.
They have no real backers. :(

That's one way of looking at it, i suppose.

Another would be to just shrug and say "Ok", but, i admit that doesn't translate well to a message board. When you're at a stage where some bloke, or woman (solidarity there, sisters) says they're gay and hardly anyone bats an eyelid, that's a good thing, no?

(Actually, i'll confess, i have no idea who this chap is.)

Jason Paul Collins (born December 2, 1978) is an American professional basketball center with the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Collins attended Stanford University, where he was an All-American in 2000–01. He was selected in the first round with the 18th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft.

Ah, a basketballer, eh?

Well, good luck to the bloke.

Although, reading some of the enlightened comments posted here yesterday, you can kind of see why he didn't come out a little earlier.

This reminds me of the tragic story of Justin Fashanu.

Justinus Soni "Justin" Fashanu (pron.: /ˈfæʃən/ FASH-ə-noo; 19 February 1961 – 2 May 1998) was an English footballer who played for a variety of clubs between 1978 and 1997. He was known by his early clubs to be gay, and came out to the press later in his career, to become the first and only English professional footballer to be openly homosexual.[SUP][4][/SUP] He was also the first black footballer to command a £1million transfer fee, with his transfer from Norwich City to Nottingham Forest in 1981, but had little success as a player afterwards, although he continued to play at senior level until 1994.
After moving to the United States, in 1998 he was questioned by police when a seventeen-year-old boy accused him of sexual assault. Fashanu committed suicide in May of that year, his suicide note stating that the sex was consensual.[SUP][5]

It is a good thing .. and without questioning his motives for coming out .. it will end up being a very profitable thing for him.

If I'm not mistaken, he isn't currently playing for anyone, and as Obama has demonstrated, there is market value in Collins image.

I'd imagine that he'll be getting several offers to make NBA teams so they can sell him.

Why would the Collins story remind you of this tragedy?

This is an admittedly very cynical view but it crossed my mind yesterday too I wonder if he did it now because he thought it might help him hook onto to a team? He's played 14 years in the league and is at the very end of his career. He's currently a free agent without a team. In the past you would never have thought coming out as a gay man would be a benefit to a player but at this time and at this point in his career where he's looking to play one maybe two seasons more at most this could possibly benefit him.

From a human interest perspective it was report his identical twin brother had no clue Jason was gay. You often hear about how in touch with each other twins are I thought that was kind of surprising.

I don't think that's cynical at all .. rather a distinct possibility.

It would be marketing genius.

For a million dollar contract .. I might think about pretending gayness for the paycheck. :0)

Because he was a sportsman in a sport where being gay was not considered a good career move, at least not back then anyway.

I can name you ten others who did the same thing but didn't diddle a 17 year old. Let's celebrate the courage, and not point out failure.

I'll go you one better. Pretend to be gay for the million dollar contract, play for a few years and then retire. When you get tired of pretending to be gay, enroll in one of those laughable "gay conversion" classes and become the spokesman for how well they work. I'm betting the mega churches would pay you millions to go on a speaking tour.

An open invitation to Fox News and the 700 Club .. a PAC to run for political office ..

:0) .. and a bevy of voluptuous women stashed in a secret hideaway.
