As for Socialism vs. Capitalism, I would agree that the latter is more of a stand on your own mentality and thus in a sense lacks the degree of compassion under true socialism. That said, I would argue that in some cases that compassion under socialism actually does more harm for an individual than good... those cases I speak of are the instances where a person becomes reliant upon the compassion and ceases to at least try to fend for themselves.

Cuba is a FAR more compassionate, educated, and healthy nation now than before socialism.

As a young child I was taught that one had no need to talk or mix with the working classes, I watched slum kids and thought of them as a different species. I was taught to manage not to be managed. I was taught to kneel on Sundays and have afternoon tea and when I finally achieved some small part of adulthood, I learned (I was not consciously taught) that the life we lived in the 1950s was unjust and only a cigarette paper away from the slavery that only happened in far off countries.
Thatcher was for half the country, an abomination. She will be remembered.

I see we have another Brit here now. Living in Newport or somewhere like that (not really Wales in the minds of some). like me, a southerner, like me one of those who were not greatly affected by thatcher, but unlike me he appears to have very little humanity or conscience about him.

We should compare Cuba after more than 50 years of embargo to America today, but not to its past?

Even in that comparison .. Cuba has more doctors per capita than any nation on earth. Medical tourism is an industry there. It has a higher literacy rate then the US or the UK.

If Cuba was invading other countries and mass-murdering their citizens, you'd be all over it.

If you aren't interested in honest discussion .. go talk to someone else.

I agree with much of what you say and would add that they have a home grown pharma industry as well. However they also have a disproportionally prison population and it is well documented that torture is used on a regular basis.

Obama would do well to lift the sanctions on Cuba there is no point to them after all these years.

I agree with you that Obama should lift the sanctions. Cuba does the best it can for its people with what it has.

Also keep in mind that we invaded Cuba ... and its citizens fought back.

They are wise to pay attention to subterfuge.
