Obama's "best-looking" remark draws reaction

Instead of leaving the Bay Area Thursday after what would have normally been a quiet two-day fundraising trip, President Obama faced some criticism for calling California's Kamala Harris "the best-looking attorney general in the country."

Obama's comments came at the second of two fundraisers in Atherton Thursday and began with praise for Harris' performance as attorney general.

"You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you'd want in anybody who is administering the law and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake," Obama said. "She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country."

Reacting to news reports of the event, some critics labeled the remarks insulting. "Obama in need of gender-sensitivity training," read one blog from New York Magazine.

The reactions took place mostly on Twitter and on blogs, and many commentators took the comment as an opportunity to joke about who they believe are the most attractive attorneys general.

Also at the fundraiser, Obama singled out South Bay Rep. Mike Honda, a Democrat from San Jose who is facing former Obama administration official and fellow Democrat Ro Khanna in the 2014 election. The Honda campaign has been touting Obama's endorsement.

"Somebody who works tirelessly on behalf of California every day but also works on behalf of working people and makes sure that we've got a more inclusive America - a good friend of mine, somebody who you guys should be very proud of," Obama said of Honda.

The Atherton fundraisers benefited the Democratic National Committee and were held at the homes of Mark Heising and Liz Simons, and Marcia and John Goldman.

In his remarks, Obama highlighted the legacy he hopes to leave after his second term, saying he wanted to improve the economy for the middle class, address climate change and push for gay rights.

He also said he hopes to see immigration reform and new gun-control laws enacted, but that Americans will have to mobilize for such initiatives if the gridlocked Congress is to act.

Obama on Wednesday held two fundraisers in San Francisco for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, at which he emphasized his goal to return House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco to the speakership.

Obama left San Francisco Thursday afternoon and returned to Washington.

Cawacko, female is a good word to use if you are talking about a cat. Try "women". Okay, just try it and see how it feels.

I think he was making this statement because very few attorney generals are women. So he was probably making the joke because most AG's are pasty faced balding guys. Of course i could have told him it wasn't the best joke to make for obvious reasons. I know why it would bother some people.

Let's say you were in a networking group, and there were very few women in it, and the president of the chapter introduced a woman there as "the best looking member of our group", everyone would laugh, and it would be taken pretty well. Usually. No guarantees. But the President of the US saying it - probably not the best idea.

So in a nutshell Cawacko, it's okay to compliment a woman in business as long as it's not done lasciviously. But if you are the President of the United States, it's best to avoid these things.

Of course just the idea of what would go on in that oval office if you ever became president is enough to make me reach for the brain bleach.

So generally speaking Cawacko, it's okay to compliment a woman in business as long as it's not done lasciviously. But if you are the President of the United States, it's best to avoid these things. So now I just looked up the woman in question, and from the one picture I saw she does appear to be strikingly beautiful, so, this could also be seen as flirtatious. Again, pretty much fine in business settings assuming you have no power over the woman, but if you become President Cawacko, I would avoid it. Of course just the idea of what would go on in that oval office if you ever became president is enough to make me reach for the brain bleach.

Yet again Obama's slavish fans excuse his bad behavior. Getting an Obama stooge to criticize him for his mistakes apparently takes an act of God. Get a clue people , Obama is not really a "messiah".

Like many sites sfgate.com has a comments site after the article. If you check it out most of the comments (for this article) say this is the media trying to make something out of nothing or it's the 'wingnuts' just trying to find another way to attack this President. Hence my asking the question.

It's a very touchy subject. I could talk about it for hours, but not here. And I also think it depends upon a lot of things. For instance I think the things I would say about this now are far different than the things I would have said when I was 25 and under near constant harassment in the office. And now I am grateful for compliments, LOL. But it can't be all about me, so I will just leave it to other women to sort out. I will stick with making rape apologists miserable. Rana and Christie will probably have smart things to say.

Natch. I'm sure it's front page on Drudge.

There's a big difference between complimenting a woman's liiks and job performance and making ignorant remarks.

Man. See you guys don't even know how cool I am. You guys think I'm a "radical" feminist. That always makes me laugh. Some day one of you will really meet one and after she is done kicking the shit out of you, you will think to yourself "i really miss darla".
You just criticized somebody for the use of the term female, which is literally the most neutral scientific description of a woman.

He should have thought twice before saying this. Wouldn't say I'm offended but I did cringe.

Good article. I'm trying and failing to think of a single instance where a comment like Obama's was applied to a man.

It's not something the President of the United States should have said. It's a difficult line to walk, or at least I find it to be, because men always jump around yelling "oh so you can't even give a woman a compliment anymore". And that is totally not who I am. I actually love when my business pals flirt with me. So I never really know what to say. It's like, it's okay until suddenly it's not okay. And that's really difficult to explain to men. Or maybe they always know, and just pretend not to. I don't know. I am really good on a lot of these issues, and that's because I feel them, but on this one, I always get lost and I know it.

people usually tend to comment on the attractiveness of those that would normally be attracted to. guys usually don't think about how attractive other guys are. Obama isn't gay.

...

confirmed proof women and men just have different brain wiring. I won't even try to decipher that.

lmao trust me, no we are not. We legit 100% don't get you women at all (when it comes to what stuff like what you just said above).

I agree. Women do not object to being told they're good looking, or that they look nice today in the right context, but it was probably not a good thing for the President to say.

It's okay until it's not okay. Every woman understands this. I can't explain it any better than that.
