TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Two members of the Torrington High School football team have been charged with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl, who has been taunted on social media sites in recent weeks by dozens of classmates upset at the allegations.
The Register Citizen reports (http://bit.ly/Yq7JnO ) the two 18-year-old football players, Edgar Gonzalez and Joan Toribio, have been charged with felony second-degree sexual assault and other crimes in an investigation that began last month. Both have pleaded not guilty.
Details of the allegations have been sealed from public view.
The newspaper reports social media posts by classmates taunting the accuser have included vulgar language and have blamed her for ruining the players' lives.
The case mirrors one in Steubenville, Ohio, where two football players were convicted this week of raping a girl who was later threatened online.

Something is very wrong in sports, and it does seem to be much worse with football, yes. Is it the unique violence of football, coupled with the way they seem to be more likely to be viewed as future superstars and current heroes? I think there is a lot going on there and that's part of it.

I actually went to Torrington high for half a year. Im from CT.

That school has been going downhill for at least 15 years. When I went (back in . . . '04?) it was a bunch of whiney 'goths' fighting with a bunch of equally whiney 'gangsters'. the problem has only gotten worse as Hartford becomes depopulated by people fleeing the dying city.

I am not surprised Torrington High is involved in this type of foulness. Im so glad my little sister and her mother moved out of that city.

In all actuality, there is a common sense of "being above" discipline within all high school sports, much like ignoring substandard academics from students participating in sports.

It's more prevalent in the south and particularly with football. As I stated before, the Steubenville incident was covered up by the high school, police, and parents until the outside media got ahold of it.

There is not a common sense of being above disipline among these millions of kids. Many kids think they are invisible and can't be touched because they are young. It's why we hear the phrase young and dumb but that is in no way exclusive to athletes.

If we start demphasizing athletics for millions of kids what do we think they would do with that now free time they find themselves with after school? Athletics does so much more positive for kids than it does negative you can't even put a number on it. These few horrible stories don't change that.

I'd like to see a lot more attention paid to this culture, to find out just how true any of this. I don't think it's just a few stories or just a few kids. Unless you are naive enough to believe the few stories making the press are the only ones out there. Uh uh.
