SHOCKING REVELEATION!

Pope Benedict said on Monday he will resign on Feb 28 because he no longer has the strength to fulfill the duties of his office, becoming the first pontiff since the Middle Ages to take such a step.

The 85-year-old pope said he had noticed that his strength had deteriorated over recent months "to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me".

"For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter," he said according to a statement from the Vatican.

A Vatican spokesman said the pontiff would step down from 1900 GMT on February 28, leaving the office vacant until a successor is chosen

How sad...he can't manage the day to day activities of his positon...hopefully he'll be able to continue his extracurricular pastime.

I wonder if they will be able to find an archbishop or cardinal who didn't cover up or participate in child rape to replace this one?

This will be the challenge.

I am glad he resigned. It is disgraceful he was elected in the first place.

Here are my questions...

Does he, like a President, still get to be called by his former title? Will we have to call him "Your Imminence" and "The Holy See" and "Holy Father" the rest of his life, or will he just be a Cardinal like before living in a Nunnery quietly praying?

He isn't below 80, but that strict rule seems only to apply when the Pope dies, will he be able to vote on the next Pope?

He will head to a convent shortly after his last day at the end of February. Given that this hasn't happened in about 600 or so years, I say we get to make up whatever title for him we want. He definitely does not have a vote for next Pope, but it is hard to imagine he won't have any influence.

My guess is they go with someone from S. America or Africa this time around.

Popes aren't called "Your Eminence" (not Imminence); that's for cardinals. The Pope is "Your Holiness." And "The Holy See" isn't the title of a person but the jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Rome.

My guess is he'll still be "Your Holiness" just like ex-presidents are still "Mr. President."

Does he still get a bunch of Swedes to guard him? Is there a secondary pope-mobile for him to travel in? Does he get, like the President, free mail for life?

He gets an apartment in the Vatican and gets to live in luxury the rest of his life. He should be in prison.

If he had Swedes to guard him it would certainly be a turnip for the books. His guards are Swiss.

True, but all my questions are pretty much nonsense anyway. I am almost totally uninterested in the topic other than as a way to have some fun and learn trivia. Such as: Does he get to keep his Swiss guards and is there a secondary Popemobile for him to travel in or do they think that he is now just as unimportant as he was before he became the Pope?
