Apparently the residents of Timbuktu were more than happy to succumb to the colonialists. Maybe BAC can explain why they were wrong to welcome the French oppressors?

"We are independent again! We were held hostage for 10 months but it seemed like 10 years," exulted Hama Cisse, echoing the euphoria in Mali's historic city of Timbuktu which French-led soldiers freed from Islamist occupation on Monday.

In the dusty streets of the ancient city on the edge of the Sahara, which fell to French and Malian soldiers without any resistance by Islamists, the women were walking again freely after being cloistered and forced to cover their faces.
"I had to wear a burqah, gloves and cover everything," said Lahlia Garba, a woman in her fifties, adding she suffered from "anxiety and stomach pain" every time she was trapped in layers of cloth.
The once cosmopolitan town and a centre of Islamic learning for centuries, Timbuktu became a dusty outpost for the extremists, who forced women to wear veils, whipped and stoned those who violated their version of strict Islamic law, and destroyed ancient Muslim shrines they considered "idolatrous".

If has been reported that a modern library building built by the South Africans has been set fire to and a number of priceless Islamic texts from the 13th century have been destroyed. What the fuck kind of people would do a thing like that??

They think many ancient texts have been stolen so there is a sort of hope that even if they are not returned they are safe.
After all ownership of such things is moot.

Excellent reporting from Al Jazeera English. Better, I am told, than Aunty Beeb.

French troops entered Timbuktu?

Where were they retreating from?

You're thinking of the Italians. The French know how to kick ass, even if they are often on the wrong side (as in Rwanda) due to their crook politicians.

But this time it's THANK YOU FRANCE.

We can go after these Islamist assholes, and we should to the ends of the earth, but it's their doctrine that needs to be dismantled. Islam is a travesty in its current state, and yes it is the primitive scripture of Islam that is the problem, by lending itself to this kind of interpretation, and constantly transmitting itself to new idiots.
