Unprincipled and dishonest Christians argue that yoga exercises are an establishement of Hinduism.

Certain parents in a San Diego suburb are concerned that their school district's teachings of yoga are promoting Hinduism. Elementary students in the Encinitas Union School District have been learning yoga as part of the physical education curriculum. The charge against this practice is being led by the National Center for Law and Policy, a conservative Christian organization based in nearby Escondido.

Clever title!

This is a stretch, but I am sure others will not agree! If the teacher was instructing the students on the tenets of Hindism, I would have a problem, but yoga as an exercise is something you can use you your entire lifetime. I am glad the schools are finally incorporating it. When my doctor gives me the go ahead to exercise, again, yoga is on my list.

I'm with Rana on this. If there really is some ulterior motive here of teaching Hinduism and they got caught then I have no problem with what these parents are doing. But my guess is it is simple yoga exercises and these parents are WAY overreacting. If the parents want to explain to their kids why they think yoga is bad or against christianity then that is their right but there is nothing wrong with doing yoga in gym class.

Yeah, it does not indicate whether they are teaching Hindusim, but since it is in a pe class I doubt it. Yoga as exercise and a method of relaxation is fine.

Of course, some will claim that if you teach them to believe that a yard can be divided in to three equal thirds of one foot then you are pushing faith. :)

Not only is yoga fine, it is very beneficial to the body. Preventative care and core strengthening that you get from yoga will help keep their bodies from breaking down/suffering injuries as fast as would occur otherwise.

I used to think yoga was a bunch of tree hugging hippie garbage. I did it for the first time a couple of years ago when I started doing P90X and I definitely see the benefit of it now.

Well, it is tree-hugging hippie garbage. It's just beneficial tree-hugging hippie garbage, like vegetarianism.

I suffered a back injury in October, I am working on my core right now! Learning just how important it is and that it is the one area that has no "muscle memory". Everybody, Kegel!

I had to look up what yogo actually is......

Wiki and the dictionary.....

Yoga (Sanskrit, Pāli: योग, /ˈjəʊɡə/, yoga) is a commonly known generic term for physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines which originated in ancient India. Specifically, yoga is one of the six āstika ("orthodox") schools of Hindu philosophy. One of the most detailed and thorough expositions on the subject are the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. Various traditions of yoga are found in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.

yoga [ˈjəʊgə]
1. (Philosophy) (Non-Christian Religions / Hinduism) a Hindu system of philosophy aiming at the mystical union of the self with the Supreme Being in a state of complete awareness and tranquillity through certain physical and mental exercises

Though is seems an innocent enough form of physical excercise,
Is yoga the only type of "excercise" to use to achieve what the schools want to achieve ? Doesn't normal everyday PE accomplish the goal ?

Good luck with the recovery. I definitely appreciate now the importance of keeping your body flexible and conditioned.

Watch a youtube yoga video. It's simple exercises that work on your flexibility and core. The exercises have nothing to do with religion.

Thanks, my recovery has been exceptionally speedy because I am still flexible! Now I plan to be even more so! I am a believer!

I wish we were more like the Chinese and had public morning work outs!

I did it once on acid, and never did it again.

I tend to agree with you cawac....the exercises could be done without ever even calling attention to yoga in the first place....

BUT....then you have rana's post.....and its implications.....maybe the parents have a point after all....LMAO
