Connecticut town to collect and destroy violent games

As Connecticut residents continue to try to come to grips with the horrific school shootings in Newtown, one nearby city is calling on citizens to round up and destroy their violent video games.

On Jan. 12, citizens of Southington, located about 30 miles to the northeast of Newtown, will have the opportunity to visit their city's drive-in theater and deposit violent games in a trash bin in return for a $25 gift certificate to a family-friendly local attraction.
Those games will be snapped into pieces and likely later incinerated, town officials told Polygon.

The Violent Video Games Return Program was organized by a group called the SouthingtonSOS, which includes members of the town’s Chamber of Commerce, board of education, fire department and clergy, among others. While the idea of games being collected and destroyed might raise memories of book burnings among some people, the group is quick to point out that the return program is not meant to be a construed as a statement blaming games for the school shooting.

That said, organizers are no fans of violent games either.

is this offensive and ignorant?

Is it offensive and ignorant? Not exactly.

While I don't agree with the premise of this endeavor, it's good that a community is making a concerted effort to accomplish a goal in which they believe. Seeing this is huge for me - it's a statement that it doesn't take the federal government to spur change, it takes a community of determined, like minded individuals.

i agree shy guy. if this was mandatory, it would be offensive, ignorant and likely unconstitutional. the fact this voluntary, i have no problem with.

considering the other side, i can see how some might perceive this as a "burn the books" type issue.

I suppose it's not that hard to see the other side, but this is no more an issue than throwing away unwanted items. It's simply a community renouncing violence in the media - it's difficult for me to believe that anyone would actually oppose this.

same here. though i can see the opposition believing this to be a slippery slope type situation. i don't believe it is and fully support the community's idea. that is what makes america great.

Next week, they're going to have a book burning. :palm:

It sounds like a marketing ploy for the family friendly local attraction. That's somewhat offensive.

If not then the only thing that is offensive about it is the collosal waste of time, energy and resources involved. It's feel good bullshit. My modest contributions to the top link in my signature last month and/or the month before stands a better chance of "saving lives" then this event.

Offensive to you maybe , But I think getting these violent games out of the hands of children is a great idea.

The could address their lack of parenting but whatever.

I hear the town next plans on addressing that particular by banning dances within the city limits...

That is, until a spunky outsider moves to town and teaches the elders the error of their ways...LOL

Yurt engaging in civil debate with another poster.

The OP asked if it was offensive, wanderingbear answered with his opinion and immediately the YurTard attacks.

his comment was wholly ignorant, if he had just read the thread he wouldn't have said "Offensive to you maybe"

poor angry zappa, always whining about other people not being civil, yet he refuses to be civil

pound sand

How do you know what he would have said?

Look out everyone...the Amazing Yurskin has got his Amazing Mental Powers working.

Bottom line...the OP asked a question and wanderingbear responded.

Then the YurTard immediately engaged with his standard "civil" response.

stop derailing every thread you enter. thank you.

lol

will zappa cry about bear's "civil" post

Well, since you had ALREADY LOWERED the discussion with your derisive taunts, one can't fault others for lowering themselves to respond to you on your level.

The YurTard believes he's the only one allowed to hurl invective.

Others must remain above such nonsense.

cite where i said i'm the only one allowed to "hurl invective"

if you don't, then we just have more proof you're a liar

i like zappa's deranged liberal thinking...it is always someone else's fault

LOL
