Doctor Shortage Likely to Worsen With Health Law

In the Inland Empire, an economically depressed region in Southern California, President Obama’s health care law is expected to extend insurance coverage to more than 300,000 people by 2014. But coverage will not necessarily translate into care: Local health experts doubt there will be enough doctors to meet the area’s needs. There are not enough now.

I would like to see just 1/10th of the effort put into preventative care as we put into medical care.

If we did what we know works to prevent health issues in the first place, we wouldn't need as many doctors.

I agree.

But what we are left with today is woefully inadequate.

Can't say I am a fan of this thread, BAC. A stitch in time saves nine.

I can say that I am a fan of you and your thoughts my friend.

This thread speaks to an UNDENIABLE truth.

There aren't enough doctors, the system is broken, and Obamacare doesn't address it.

I would like to see just 1/10th of the effort put into preventative care as we put into medical care.

If we did what we know works to prevent health issues in the first place, we wouldn't need as many doctors.

You are wise.

The shortage of doctors and nurses has been around a lot longer than Obamacare.

Wouldn't subsidized training and education in the form of a new stimulus be a great step forward in solving this problem?

Why, yes!
Obamacare tackles several of these problems head-on by encouraging primary and preventative care, funding community health clinics in sparsely-serviced communities, and holding providers accountable for inefficiency by withholding reimbursements from low-performing centers and mandating the use of electronic health records. And some medical schools have followed suit, encouraging young doctors to dedicate themselves to much-needed family and primary care.

But this does little to make up for the overall shortage, since the crux of the dilemma is a basic issue of supply and demand. The American consumer’s demand for health services — fueled by an aging populace and increased access to care — has increased rapidly in the last decades, but the supply of medical professionals has not experienced a corresponding boom.

The answer, BAC, is not to get rid of Obamacare and gut it. The answer is, as WB said, focus on more preventative care and find and train more doctors and nurses.

Side note: For several years as a State employee, I worked at the Board of Nursing in our state; the regulating agency for nurses, CNA's and other professions. We found that, nationwide, there is a large pool of immigrant nurses (and doctors) who face tremendous hurdles in getting recognition for their training overseas in order to be licensed in their profession in the US.

In addition to providing training to new professionals, we should examine the proper route to streamline the licensing process for these immigrants.

I agree with all that .. but there is no energy in Washington to do anything that will cost a dime.

ALL, as in every word of what you and WB have proposed was included in the healthcare proposals and warnings that were presented to team Obama by not only PNHP, but also by Nurses groups all over the country, as well as those of us who opposed the corporate-fed ACA.

I still don't see any energy by progressives who should know better to challenge Obama on his failures.

How does what you suggest get done without demand?

A good healthcare law would have adequately addressed this problem which doctors and organizations like Physicians for National Health Program were screaming about.

Unfortunately, Obama and the Dems lost precious time trying to persuade the Repubs to get on board rather than focusing on those things but they can be addressed. One way is to insist on referrals to specialists. The patient suffering heart burn doesn't require an appointment with a heart surgeon. Another way is to have nurses on the front line dressing wounds, taking blood pressure, etc. And, finally, a revamping of university and hospital training.

Like everything else to do with medical care the entire process of becoming a doctor involves profit. As ObamaCare evolves into full government medical those problems will be addressed. Other countries have succeeded in doing so by having local clinics deal with every day aches and pains and by lowering tuition costs.

We have to keep in mind one political party is intent on doing whatever it can to disrupt the system. If both worked together those problems would be quickly addressed. On the upside the big step has been taken. Once the people start to see the benefits they'll insist on politicians working together. As with every other country with government medical political opponents of the system are quickly replaced.

Much respect for your thoughts.

All of that which you suggest SHOULD have be included in any healthcare legislation. Those who tried to force their inclusion were shut down .. not by republicans, but by Obama and democrats. Obama removed valid and thoughtful proposals from the negotiations even before they began .. and democrats made excuses for it.

My point is not in pointing fingers at democratic failures as much as it is to state where we are today.

Where we are is that we've invited millions of people into a broken system that was never addressed.

Without demand .. nothing will change.

Most, with the exception of training, were included in the act. The rest? "there is no energy in Washington to do anything that will cost a dime".

That cannot be blamed on the President or Obamacare. Thanks to obstructionism from the right, the bill passed was but a minor portion of what the president originally proposed. Using archaic arguments, the right protested on providing stimulus funds for training and congress had to water down the bill to get any kind of approval.

Hopefully, as the economy improves, we'll see greater changes to the bill that addresses these issues. But first we need cooperation.

I still don't see any energy by progressives who should know better to challenge Obama on his failures.

Again, it's not Obama's failures and it certainly isn't the fault of progressives. Quite honestly there just aren't enough progressives to get the job done. It's up to the remainder of the Democratic Party to figure this out and go from there.

Very well put!

BINGO!

You are another one of my favorite people that I unfortunately must disagree with on this issue.

"It's up to democrats?????"

Democrats have made NO demands of Obama no matter what he does. He continues to give progressives the finger on an almost daily basis.

Adequate provisions for training were NOT included in the law .. which was a bigger boon for the health insurance industry than it is for the American people.

OBAMA removed many of the best ideas from the bill.

OBAMA went into backroom deals with the health insurance industry and Big Pharma to come up with this woefully inadequate bill.

Had Obama took the healthcare issue to the public instead of whining about republicans, the wipeout of the 2010 midterms would not have happened.

ALL of what is being debated here was proposed BEFORE Obamacare and the health insurers bill passed.

Democrats will never demand anything of Obama .. thus, what is in the bill is about all Americans are going to get.

Thanks for the compliment. This thread should be shown to the trolls like Yurt and ILA as an example of constructive debate.

I think you may have misunderstood what I said, BAC.

Aside from the fact that Obama doesn't write the bills and doesn't make the deals (those are done by Congress) he does have some input. Unfortunately, he also has to deal with right-leaning Democrats and center-leaning Democrats who are (unfortunately) listening to insane teabaggers in their home districts as opposed to the truth.

Those are the Democrats I'm talking about. They need to support the goals of the president.

Good day to you, Blackascoal.

My position is nothing would have passed if Obama and the Dems had not watered it down as evidenced by the court cases that were brought. The very idea was repugnant to the Repubs. Furthermore, Dems also represented moneyed constituents so it was a hard sell from the get-go. Added to that was the lies and distortions, rumors of doctors quitting, talk of dismantling Medicare/Medicaid, etc. It's easy to see why anyone not intimately familiar with government medical would be initially opposed to it.

There is a long way to go but the first step has been taken after 100 years. (It was first brought up in 1912!) Whether it be the Repubs or the wealthy Dems they both know things will never return to the "good old days". There's only one way to go and whoever wants to score points now will have to work on improving the system. There will be representatives in Congress who will spend time researching government plans and coming forward with ideas now that they know it is something for which they will get acknowledgement. In the words of Mr. Emanuel, "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste." And a crisis is brewing.

Obama is not a progressive, lefty, or liberal. He's a right-leaning politican, who on many issues, is absolutely indistinguishable from George Bush.

He is a corporatist.

You cannot expect progressive action from a corporatist unless you push him into it.

The goals of this president is to empower and protect corporations anyway he can. Obamacare is a prime example of that as it benefits the health insurance industry and Big Pharma more than it benefits the American people, who are about to run into a healthcare nightmare.

You are a progressive good brother. Obama is not on your side.

:0)

Good day to you Apple.

If Obama went into office with any mandate, it was to pass a good healthcare bill. Even the republican opposition was forced to produce plans of their own. He had the majority of the country with him on that issue .. and a majority supported single-payer.

When the republicans stone-walled, he could have taken the issue to the midterm elections. Americans were clammoring for healthcare reform. He could have forced the republican hand .. AND, I GUARANTEEE you that democrats would not have taken the beating that they did in the midterms .. which were a direct result of Obama's weakness and failures during the healthcare debate.

This isn't rocket science .. it's smart politics.

NOW, we have a flawed healthcare plan that has never been supported by the majority of the American people, and one that is fraught with failures to address the issue of healthcare.

It doesn't even control costs.

The reality is that doctors ARE leaving the system.

There ARE going to be longer wait times .. AND Obama is set and prepared to slash Medicare and Medicaid.

Those weren't rumors .. they were warnings.

I can say that I am a fan of you and your thoughts my friend.

This thread speaks to an UNDENIABLE truth.

There aren't enough doctors, the system is broken, and Obamacare doesn't address it.

It wasn't meant to, BAC. It literally doesn't even cover the people that Obama said needed coverage when he was running. It doesn't even solve the problem of coverage, let alone the problems of cost.

And again BAC shoots and scores....sorry BAC, but the pinheads just don't get it....and won't get it until the DNC or Huffington, or Rachael Maddow explain it to them
and prove its all Bush's fault.....
The government just don't reimburse the doctors or hospitals enough to make the profession worth the risk or time, so common sense and logic tells us healthcare will
deteriorate further than it already has.....
Three close family are in the field, two being MD's and I hear the complaints, lousy working hours, insane paperwork and bookkeeping, etc....
Some refuse to take on more patients, especially medicare patients....some are into "concierge service" already and others considering it.....
And some considering retirement.....few go into 'family practice' because of the low earnings and low insurance payments....payments that are taking
up to a year to even get and sometimes longer and on a regular basis, its a fight to get paid.

The pinheads will learn the hard way and cause all of to suffer because of their partisan stupidity and obsession with trying socialism....

I think the debt burden will bury us before this gov. healthcare madness will get a chance to....

Pinheads are paying more for a visit from their plumber than they want to pay for a doctors visit....they been brainwashed into thinking healthcare is somehow a
god given right by the socialist Marxists...

My opinion is that Obama is as progressive as me. I also believe that, like me, he's a realist. I don't like some of the stuff he does, but like Althea said, it's all he can do until some of the teabagger scum get booted out of office and conservative democrats see the light.

I'm sorry, but then you don't know Obama. You haven't studied his history.

Progressives DO NOT start unnecessary wars for profit.

Progressives DO NOT authorize attacks on civil liberties.

Progressives do not have the record of Barack Obama.

Blaming republicans for Obama's failures is why he gets away with it.

Who forced Obama to murder innocent children?

Is that what progressives do?
