Al Jazeera takes over Current TV as the Arab news network looks to expand American audience ... and Al Gore will serve as adviser
Pan-Arab news network Al Jazeera is taking over the embattled American cable channel Current TV, which was founded by Al Gore, the New York Times' Brian Stetler reported.
Al Jazeera will create a brand new New York-based channel - rather than airing its 'Al Jazeera English' over the channel - which it hopes will compete with other major American news networks, such as CNN and NBC.
Current TV, which has become known for its left-wing programming, has struggled to grow its audience since it was launched in 2005.
The channel is available in roughly 60 million homes, and yet just 42,000 customers were watching it on a typical night last year. By comparison, CNN had more than three million viewers on an average night.
