Abe Lincoln, the libs favorite humanitarian president

The day after Christmas will be sombre for Dakota Indians marking what they consider a travesty of justice 150 years ago, when 38 of their ancestors were executed in the biggest mass hanging in U.S. history.

Overshadowed by the Civil War raging in the East, the hangings in Mankato, Minnesota, on December 26, 1862, followed the often overlooked six-week U.S.-Dakota war earlier that year -- a war that marked the start of three decades of fighting between Native Americans and the U.S. government across the Plains.

President Abraham Lincoln intervened in the case, demanding a review that reduced the number of death sentences. But he allowed 38 to be executed, including two men historians believe were hanged in error, even as he was preparing the Emancipation Proclamation to free black slaves in the South.

Lincoln was one of our worst Presidents ever. But don't try to tell that to our public educated, indoctrinated population. He freed the blacks from slavery. That is all they know

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Lincoln a Republican and didn't he commute over 200 hundred death sentences in that case and that those whom were exectued, excepting possibly the two you mentioned, had committed multiple murders?

It's actually difficult to imagine the abuses & death that would have occurred if Lincoln had NOT been President.

Ergo, this thread kind of fails.

and yet again, people continue to miss my point about most of my posts, ergo you all fail.

The one thing that SHOULD be quite evident is it isn't difficult to imagine all the abuses and deaths that actually HAVE occurred, because of past presidents left and right.

Your argument is weak. It seems to be, "unless you stop ALL abuse, you haven't been humanitarian."

And what about the deaths and abuses that would have occured had we lived in your libertarian utopia?

DUH!!! stopping abuse from one side, but approving it on other hardly makes one a humanitarian
That depends. Lincolns political goal was never to be a humanitarian but rather to save the union. That's pretty much the marker by which Lincoln is judged by and by that standard he's been judged by history as one of our top two Presidents (along with Washington) because he did suceed under such trying circumstances and he saved the only Democratic Republic in the world, at that time, from certain oblivion.

what deaths and abuses would those be? can you cite some?
You can't cite that which has not occured and thankfully so cause had you libertarians been in charge law and order would have collapsed and we would have lived under the rule of gun, knife and sword instead of the rule of law and it doesn't take a Nostradamus to predict that the numbers of abuses and deaths in those circumstances would have been orders of magnitude greater.

or we could look at it realistically and acknowledge that ending slavery wasn't his goal, nor in fact was he concerned about the slaves, and that by defeating and then subjugating the southern states, ended the free nation that the founders had tried to achieve.

but apparently you can speculate and claim that murder and mayhem would run rampant with zero proof or evidence to back it up.

Only if you have a crystal ball or think you're a relative of Nostradamus......its all conjecture....just as "the historians" that 'think' two of those executed were innocent...

Second guessing those that were there and living in those trying times is useless.....

It's pretty obvious that STN is unhappy with any and all of our government since it's inception. Why he still lives in this country and puts up with this abuse is amusing...
