Over the years worker’s conditions have improved. From minimum wage to safety clothes every time a change was implemented we heard the familiar cry. “Businesses will go bankrupt. They can’t afford it.” But they can afford it and those that can’t deserve to go bankrupt.

If McDonalds hired 10 year olds at $2.00/hr. to work in the back away from customer’s view they’d probably sell more hamburgers but as a society we don’t tolerate that. Society, all of society, moves along as we progress and evolve. Whether its wages or safety or working conditions all of society should benefit from advancement. Just like people pay $2.00 for McDonald’s burger instead of $1.00 because there are no 10 year olds working in the back people going to Papa Johns will pay a bit more for pizza and employees will have medical coverage. Or PJ can fold up because it isn’t a viable business or the government can help the employees get medical insurance. One way or another the people are going to get medical insurance whether you give 50 cents to Papa Johns or 50 cents to the government. You have a choice and I know you’re all for choices.

Any business can thrive if the wages and benefits are low enough but we’re not DEvolving. We’re supposed to be Evolving. Simply stated if you want a fellow human being to serve you a pizza or make a TV set or clean your pool you’re going to pay for it or not get it. That’s what it’s all about. Improving people’s living conditions. And when people have money to invest they are going to invest it anywhere they can to make a buck. They are not going to pout and watch inflation eat at it. They are going to invest so it’s time to stop this nonsense about appeasing business.

If the US was some 3rd world country businesses may take their ball and go somewhere else but that's not the case. Even if businesses move the people who own them, the people who collect money from them will be taxed when they use that money here. Now, some can live like Dixie supposedly does and not enjoy their money and that's fine, too. Most people do not. They like to enjoy their money and to enjoy it they are going to have to pay tax on it if they want to live in the US.

It is a mind change, guys. A new paradigm, to use a popular expression. It has been in existence in other countries and it's coming here. You put up a good fight ("good" being relative) in the last election and you witnessed the results. For your own peace of mind I suggest you "go along to get along". It's happening and it's going to continue to happen. And, yes, we're here to help you adjust. All us fine Liberals and Democrats doing our best to explain it to you.

As I said you guys just don't understand. Maybe an analogy will help. Let's say someone wants a house built. They could save a lot of money and at the same time boost housing jobs if they used inferior building products and methods but they'd end up with an inferior and unsafe home. As society evolves we demand better building standards. The same applies to jobs. We demand better job standards. If a job is worth doing it's worth the individual being adequately compensated.

We can't demand better homes and cars and better everything else and still offer jobs that compare with 50 years ago. When we consider proper food/nutrition we have learned what it consists of and expect our children to be fed properly. We progress. It's as simple as that. Progress. And that's what ObamaCare is all about. Just as one expects a certain level of quality in a product or a certain level of decorum from others they meet one expects a certain level of compensation and safety concerning a job.

If you started work in a office you would expect the ceiling tiles would not fall on you while you were at your desk or the stairs would not fall apart when you used them to go to the next floor. When you buy a new car you expect the braking system to be a dual system. (In the old days all the brakes worked off one brake line so if a leak occurred the car had no brakes. Today, cars have two separate lines so if one happens to break/leak the car still has some braking power.) That's an example of how society evolves.

Hospital practices. Prison practices. Conditions improve for everyone. That is society evolving. We'd no more tolerate a hospital offering discount medical procedures but no guarantees everything has been sterilized than we would having an automobile manufacturer selling new cars with one line braking systems and no seat belts.

I don't know how else to explain things to you. It's a standard of living, if you will. We've reached the point.....well, the truth is we've long passed the point.....where medical care/insurance is just a part of living.

I even paid a guy $100 an hr. to cut my grass, damn kid next door wanted to do it $10....I told him to hit the road. He can't go to college on $10....

As covered—and criticized—in this column in great detail, Mr. Schnatter decided to mix his politics with his pepperoni when suggesting that he would be cutting the work hours for Papa John employees in order to bring them below the 30 hour per week threshold that would require Schnatter to provide his employees with healthcare benefits. It turns out, the pizza eating public did not approve.

Indeed, so serious was the reaction that Schnatter was forced to publish an op-ed piece where he sought to convince us that he never really intended to cut back worker hours but had simply been speculating on what he might do in response to the legislation. According to YouGov BrandIndex, a leading marketing survey that measures brand perception in the marketplace (called “Buzz”), Papa John’s had good reason for concern as the pizza chain’s brand identity has plummeted from a high of 32 on election day, to a remarkably low score of 4 among adults who have eaten at causal dining restaurants during the past month. Ouch.

Papa John is not alone in his anti-Obamacare misery. Fast food server, Applebee’s, possessed a healthy Buzz score of 35 before Zane Terkel, CEO of one of the company’s largest franchisees, appeared on television to complain about the law and to announce that he would not be building more restaurants or hiring any more workers in response to his objections to Obamacare. Applebee’s “pre-Terkel” Buzz score of 35 now sits at a pathetic 5. I don’t imagine Mr. Terkel will be getting many Christmas cards this year from other Applebee’s franchise owners.
