Papa John's, Applebee's And Others Pay Huge Price...

... for Anti-Obamacare Politicking. We all agree this is fair, don't we? If it was okay to support Chik-Fil-A for their position, then the same reasoning applies here, right?

It turns out that being a good corporate citizen is as important to selling pizzas as the thinness of the crust or the quality of the cheese.
If you don’t believe it, just ask Papa John CEO, John Schnatter. As covered—and criticized—in this column in great detail, Mr. Schnatter decided to mix his politics with his pepperoni when suggesting that he would be cutting the work hours for Papa John employees in order to bring them below the 30 hour per week threshold that would require Schnatter to provide his employees with healthcare benefits. It turns out, the pizza eating public did not approve.

Indeed, so serious was the reaction that Schnatter was forced to publish an op-ed piece where he sought to convince us that he never really intended to cut back worker hours but had simply been speculating on what he might do in response to the legislation. According to YouGov BrandIndex, a leading marketing survey that measures brand perception in the marketplace (called “Buzz”), Papa John’s had good reason for concern as the pizza chain’s brand identity has plummeted from a high of 32 on election day, to a remarkably low score of 4 among adults who have eaten at causal dining restaurants during the past month. Ouch.

Papa John is not alone in his anti-Obamacare misery. Fast food server, Applebee’s, possessed a healthy Buzz score of 35 before Zane Terkel, CEO of one of the company’s largest franchisees, appeared on television to complain about the law and to announce that he would not be building more restaurants or hiring any more workers in response to his objections to Obamacare. Applebee’s “pre-Terkel” Buzz score of 35 now sits at a pathetic 5. I don’t imagine Mr. Terkel will be getting many Christmas cards this year from other Applebee’s franchise owners.

Darden Restaurants, Inc.— owner of Olive Garden, Red Lobster and LongHorn Steakhouse—has lowered its profit projections for the quarter ending November 25[SUP]th[/SUP], acknowledging that its bad numbers are the result of poorly performing promotions, Superstorm Sandy and…wait for it…the poor publicity it engendered by its decision to test out a plan to cut back on healthcare costs by putting more workers on part-time schedules.

Hopefully, other businesses seeking to avoid their responsibilities under the healthcare law—such as Walmart who intends to cut back employee hours in the effort to push workers onto Medicaid rolls rather than take responsibility for their employees’ health care—will get the message.

Ironically, the ultra wealthy who backed Romney, don't eat this garbage. The uninformed masses that follow the republican lead tried their hardest to bolster sales by gobbling up the 2nd rate food at the above mentioned establishments.

Unfortunately, these numbskulls are far outnumbered by those of us who will make sure that the general public stays informed re. who is, and who isn't doing their part in society.

We'll see a lot of this type of "free market" vocalizing in the next couple of years. Ironically, these companies make cuts in order to keep dividends to investors high.

What they'll accomplish, is the opposite via reduced sales.

Hostess went bankrupt before you even knew who Obama is.

More than once

Oh looky another dumb broad wanting to play in the big leagues. It is obvious you know nothing about economics and nothing about business. I have resigned myself to the fact that libtardiots have won the arguments with the American people. I am not here to change anyones mind.

But, the facts are the facts and none of your libtardiot propaganda can change math. People at these restaurants will be laid off. It isn't conjecture. It isn't anything other than hard cold fact. Doesn't make two shits to me. I will always be fine. You and your ilk will not. And I will sit back from afar and laugh my ass off at you saying "I told you so"

Someone will get the message, sooner or later.....maybe it will be the supporters of socialism.....its never worked anyone its been tried because most
of us know its an unsustainable scam....its concept is doomed because it defies logic....
We don't have enough employees working in the private sector, to support the millions working it the public sector ( funded by taxes)...this in itself
if unsustainable.......not in the long run anyway.....its simple math....

The galactic size debt now, well over 16 trillion dollars, seems to be an issue that pinheads can't grasp.....and its growing every minute of every day, and no
amount of higher taxation on the 'rich' will help. Inflation is rise and no one will escape it. The Carter days will seem like the good old days then....

"The ultra wealthy who backed Romney"....if it wasn't such a sad painfully stupid claim, it would be laughable....

Reduced sales = reduced employees = reduced taxes to Obama = increased unemployment checks = higher public debt = economic death to the nation....

Ultimately, Democrats are killing the 'golden goose (capitalism)' that feeds them and we'll all starve together.

People absolutely have the right to voice their opinions via who they do business with. If a business person wants to express their political views, then they must be willing to accept the consequences of those views... good or bad.

Well, no. Nobody will be laid off. Know why? Because the CEOs of the franchises that are claiming they'll cut back, will be pressured from the CEOs of the franchises that are doing the right thing.

Before they lose sales over a moronic public politicization of their guy's loss, they'll reverse position and do the right thing.

Wait for it.

:rofl2:

I think of all the poor minorities who wash the dishes, clean the floors, serve the food who will all be out of work thanks to liberals everywhere who are a very vindictive lot to anyone who dare goes against der leader.

According to YouGov BrandIndex, a leading marketing survey that measures brand perception in the marketplace (called “Buzz”)

OMG ROFLMAO!

Isn't this the same liberal bunch who assured us Chick-fil-a was destined for certain bankruptcy?

Liberals form some bizarre "research" group, then concoct a "buzz" rating, and everyone starts off with a nice healthy "37" or "42" ...doesn't matter what number, just something "normal" to look at. Then when any particular company does something to anger liberals, oh my goodness... their "buzz" has dropped to "4" or "2" or something equally as unimportant, just so it looks dramatic. Quarterly earnings and market shares no longer matter in liberal loony land, not when we have great institutions like this, to tell us who is who!

My personal response to this: Order some Papa John's pizza! It's pretty damn good pizza on it's own, but knowing it helps undermine this kind of blatant political propaganda, makes every bite that much more tasty.

Here's a prime example of why liberals don't need to be in charge of anything related to business. These things have absolutely NOTHING to do with "the right thing" or political leanings, and everything to do with profits. A business is not going to forsake profit in order to appease the government, that's just not going to happen in the real world. It may happen in the choom gang, or in a philosophy class on a college campus, but out in the real world, businesses will continue to operate and make decisions based on profits. If the government removes their choices, they will simply close their doors and not do business anymore.

In the end, you won't be able to pick up the phone and order a hot and ready pizza, delivered to your door in 30 minutes... You will have to fill out and submit, at the appropriate government building, numerous forms and applications, by which a government official will have to review your papers and make a determination in 90 days, then if you qualify for a pizza, they will send you an over-cooked cracker with ketchup on it, and you should get your government "pizza" in about 6 months to a year. Welcome to you new non-capitalist America people!

The election is over. Republicans lost. Best you get over it.

I love righties. This is the shit they stay up nights worrying about while laughing off climate change which is going to make pizza delivery pretty moot pretty fast in a lot of places in this country. God love em.

Agreed. That's why, in general, it's considered a poor business practice to get involved in contraversial political issues. Poor publicity can hurt business. I think Michael Jordan said it best when asked by a friend why he wouldn't endorse Harvey Gant against Jesse Helms in a North Carolina senate race. He famously quiped "Republicans buy shoes too."

You guys just don’t get it.

Over the years worker’s conditions have improved. From minimum wage to safety clothes every time a change was implemented we heard the familiar cry. “Businesses will go bankrupt. They can’t afford it.” But they can afford it and those that can’t deserve to go bankrupt.

If McDonalds hired 10 year olds at $2.00/hr. to work in the back away from customer’s view they’d probably sell more hamburgers but as a society we don’t tolerate that. Society, all of society, moves along as we progress and evolve. Whether its wages or safety or working conditions all of society should benefit from advancement. Just like people pay $2.00 for McDonald’s burger instead of $1.00 because there are no 10 year olds working in the back people going to Papa Johns will pay a bit more for pizza and employees will have medical coverage. Or PJ can fold up because it isn’t a viable business or the government can help the employees get medical insurance. One way or another the people are going to get medical insurance whether you give 50 cents to Papa Johns or 50 cents to the government. You have a choice and I know you’re all for choices.

Any business can thrive if the wages and benefits are low enough but we’re not DEvolving. We’re supposed to be Evolving. Simply stated if you want a fellow human being to serve you a pizza or make a TV set or clean your pool you’re going to pay for it or not get it. That’s what it’s all about. Improving people’s living conditions. And when people have money to invest they are going to invest it anywhere they can to make a buck. They are not going to pout and watch inflation eat at it. They are going to invest so it’s time to stop this nonsense about appeasing business.

If the US was some 3rd world country businesses may take their ball and go somewhere else but that's not the case. Even if businesses move the people who own them, the people who collect money from them will be taxed when they use that money here. Now, some can live like Dixie supposedly does and not enjoy their money and that's fine, too. Most people do not. They like to enjoy their money and to enjoy it they are going to have to pay tax on it if they want to live in the US.

It is a mind change, guys. A new paradigm, to use a popular expression. It has been in existence in other countries and it's coming here. You put up a good fight ("good" being relative) in the last election and you witnessed the results. For your own peace of mind I suggest you "go along to get along". It's happening and it's going to continue to happen. And, yes, we're here to help you adjust. All us fine Liberals and Democrats doing our best to explain it to you.
