Fucking Pig Feds, This story has me absolutely disgusted.

For 40 years the herb has been prosecuted and demonized in the political parties for many reasons but one reason was because it was used most by young democrats and people of color. The 'law and order' mentality has been pushed on the right for decades along with the 'three strikes' laws etc. This was manufactured in many ways and I'm glad to see reason return.

I think that holds true more than 'young dems'... however, the point is very valid and it is demonstrated accurate by the disproportionate arrests and sentencing of minorities.

While the right has certainly done as you stated, those in power on the left have not been much better (if at all). The one pro I saw with Obama's election was that I thought he would be more sensitive to the issue and thus fight to get it corrected (especially given his own usage). He has thus far proven me wrong on that. Hopefully he was just waiting for his second term because he didn't want to provide ammo to the right to use against him during reelection.

By young dems I was referring to those of us from the 60's...we really got under the rights skin. I hope a second term will make many things possible but the right is doubling down on their stupid obstructionism intent on bringing our country down in my view. They operate under the illusion that everything will be blamed on Obama and the dems...it won't. We'll see how this is handled now...it's time to legalize grass and stop criminalizing the public and ruining lives. It's time to address the issues this brings up.

The choice was still 10 years in jail... it is the fact that he has to go to jail at all that he has the problem with.

If you are facing a life changing 10 years in prison and no chance of appeal vs. 80 years and the right to appeal, the smart play is to maintain your rights... not give them up.

Unfortunately, most learned the wrong lesson. Do you not remember Martin Niemöller's "First they came..."? The people in Germany saw what was happening to the Jews, not to mention the poor and the gypsies and the unemployed and the homeless and...... The people saw what was happening to their neighbors but they also heard their government talk about how much better society would be if only they could do something about the 47% who were a burden.

The war on drugs in general should be stopped. Legalize them all. Tax them all. If you do something stupid while under the influence and cause harm to someone, make the penalties for that harsh. Just as we do for alcohol (which is far worse than many of the drugs that are illegal)

Pardon and release all non-violent drug offenders.

Althea didn't think through the point in my opinion. You don't give up your right to appeal in a case like that... at least not in my opinion.
 
While I don't agree with the outcome, everyone seems to be ignoring the part of the article where it states "...But these states cannot stop the federal government from enforcing its own laws..."!

What a fantastic offer they gave him.

After Mr. Williams’s conviction, the United States attorney general’s office came back with a new deal. If he waived his right to appeal, they would drop most of the charges so that he would face a minimum of 10 years in prison and pay a $288,000 judgment.
