A group of African painted dogs killed a boy who fell into their exhibit today at the Pittsburgh Zoo

The boy fell into the enclosure at 11:45 a.m., and visitors quickly alerted staff, the zoo said in a statement.

A zookeeper moved seven of the 11 dogs out of the exhibit, and a Veterinarian Department member shot darts trying to scare away the remaining dogs.

"Unfortunately, the dogs were in pack mentality and not responding," the zoo said.

Zookeepers, meanwhile, entered the exhibit to try to lure the dogs away, but they could not reach the boy in time.

The keepers and Pittsburgh police officers continued efforts, too, to lure away the dogs, and "one aggressive dog was shot and killed by an officer," according to the zoo.

lets take a real good look at this, shall we?

cops are ready and willing to shoot a dog that threatens them, but if a dog, or pack of dogs, is mauling a little kid to death, they do nothing? until one of the dogs threatens them?

FOX News reports:

A zoo where a 2-year-old boy fell into an exhibit and was fatally mauled by African wild dogs had met or exceeded all safety standards for animals and visitors, proving that no exhibit is "fail-proof," the zoo's president said Monday.

Nearby staff responded "within seconds" on Sunday but quickly determined the dog attack was fatal and didn't send handlers into the enclosure to intervene, Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium president Barbara Baker said.

Instead, the dogs were recalled into an indoor enclosure as they've been trained to respond, though four of the 11 lingered near the boy even after blank anesthetic darts, used out of an abundance of caution for the boy's safety, were fired to shoo them away. One of the dogs, which are endangered, was fatally shot by police.

If they missed the dog and shot the child, what then?
You think marksmanship under pressure is easy?

A mother holds a child over the barrier and he falls into the enclosure that houses 11 predators. Why is this a tragedy about the dogs? This is about the profound stupidity of a parent.

It seems that they determined that the child was dead before the police officer shot the dog.

And as for marksmanship being easy under pressure, perhaps not for a novice but it is for those who prepare for it.
