Being poor

I haven't read the book, yet, so we will see. I am open minded, Popeye, I read anything I think I can benefit from reading. I am not like you.

Pay special attention to the Austrian economic angle...you can do that online with some searches.

Being poor is not in itself a moral value, and can be very temporary.

Goodwill doesn't sell any other than new underwear because it is illegal to sell it used.

As for the glued soles on your shoes coming off... LOL. Me and my friends used to sound like a 5 man slap-band... I don't remember thinking I was poor, man we had good times.

People were never angry at us for walking around the mall, but we were always followed.

We never spoke any differently than the other kids at school, being poor isn't about how you talk.

I got Tinkertoys from the community Santa, not coloring books.

Intelligence is innate but barring full on developmental issues everyone has God given abilities they need to learn to exploit

Everybody's God-given abilities are not on the same level. That's why there's a bell curve. And that's why some will always fall below it.

Education is free in this country and available to all who choose to take advantage

Not all education in this country is equal. The best teachers and resources are found in well-off districts.

Motivation is something everyone can control

Maybe you can control your motivation but you can't always control the outcomes.

Opportunities abound, you just have to see them

If that were true we'd all be rich.

Thank you for agreeing with e and backing up my claim

Au contraire. Thank you for falling back on the typical conservative self-aggrandizing response, and confirming that you really don't have a clue about poverty.

i have worked hard jobs. farms, tobacco picking, roofing, you name it.

Why cant these people work towards a degree that pays them a bigger salary? If its cause they aren't smart enough they belong in #1.

I'm sure it's been answered.. but the part about "thinking $8 an hour is a great deal" comes into play.. many are working, working their asses off at $8 an hour.. but that's not enough to live, but neither can they quit and find something else because they can't take off to go search for a job... so you get stuck...and if by some lucky chance you get a 2nd job to help out a few hours at night, then you take that job.. But after both jobs, it's really hard to find classes at the local school that works around your schedule..

it's not always impossible for people to 'better' themselves...but at the same time, it's not always possible either.

YOU GOT TINKERTOYS!!

I am so jealous

Being poor is something I remember well, and poorly at the same time. I remember these things, but don't remember thinking of ourselves as poor really. We had good friends, great baseball games in the open field next to where we lived, great times.
