Prediction: Biden just cost Obama Florida

By ROBERT LAURIE – Biden’s obnoxious performance won’t play with independent or elderly voters

Paul Ryan knows his stuff. Last night, he made all the right points, had the facts on his side, and presented himself well. Despite this, Biden probably could have eked out a win if he’d just toned down his boorish behavior. Ryan was good, but low-key. On the other side of the table, Biden was out of control and his crazed, pushy, Joker impersonation cost him the debate.

Here’s a prediction. Last night also cost his campaign Florida - permanently.

Yesterday, the Tampa Bay times released a poll showing Romney leading Obama in the state, 51 to 44 percent. Frankly, I think there’s a bit of wishful thinking going on with these numbers. I’d hazard a guess that a better estimate would show Romney ahead, but within the margin of error. Think 2-3 points rather than 7.

Still, it was obvious before last night’s debate that the momentum was turning in the GOP’s favor. This isn’t just true in Florida, but in polls across the country.

Biden’s task wasn’t to single handedly save the campaign, but he was supposed to show up and stop the bleeding. After that, they'd be able to win back some of the constituents they'd been losing. He didn’t have to demolish Ryan; he needed a strong, earnest performance to make voters comfortable with his ticket after Obama’s disastrous performance the previous week.

Instead, he hit the stage with all the relaxed self-control of a coked-up Robin Williams.

So, why does this hurt Team Obama so badly in the sunshine state? Simple, Florida boasts a larger-than-average percentage of both elderly and independent voters.

According to Florida voter rolls, almost 1 in 4 voters claim some form of independent status. As we all know, pollster and election watchers all say they’ll decide the current contest. With clockwork like consistency, they cite the “uncivil tone” of politics as one of the main reasons they choose to support neither party. If that’s the case, they certainly got an earful last night. Biden’s demeanor was possibly the least “civil” of any Vice-President since Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton.

As for elderly citizens, civility counts here too, though it’s more a matter of manners and demeanor. Obviously, Florida has a large percentage of older voters than most other states, and Biden’s obnoxious bluster is unlikely to do him any favors with the demographic. It may sound quaint, or old fashioned, but this a group for which simply being polite can make a big difference.

Bottom line, while he may have fired-up an already committed base, Joe Biden did nothing to shore up the two key voting blocks that are currently causing Obama trouble in Florida. By coming across as an arrogant bully, he may very well have done irreversible damage in the exact categories his ticket so desperately needed to win.

I agree... this emotive display from Biden only jazzed the base, who were already voting for Obama. At the same time, I don't know of whom the rudeness from Biden would have appealed to, but I certainly can't see it appealing to the elderly. He should have played "folksy nice and compassionate Joe" instead of trying to be an obnoxious jerk. As was said in the article, a little nice goes a long way with these people. They were raised in a generation where this was franky taboo, you just didn't behave that way to others, and when you did, it wasn't perceived as a "good" thing at all. Polls can say whatever, I am betting, in Florida (and elsewhere) Biden didn't win any votes from seniors or independents. He may have actually cost enough to lose Florida... Way to Go, Joe!
