MS. RADDATZ: Let's move to another war, the civil war in Syria, where there are estimates that — estimates that more than 25,000, 30,000 people have now been killed. In March of last year, President Obama explained the military action taken in Libya by saying it was in the national interest to go in and prevent further massacres from occurring there. So why doesn't the same logic apply in Syria? Vice President Biden.

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: It's a different country. It's a different country. It is five times as large geographically. It has one-fifth the population that is Libya, one-fifth the population, five times as large geographically.

syria = 185,000 sq. kilometers

libya = 1.7 million sq kilometers

90% of Libya is just desert but he should have got his facts right all the same. By the way, Libya has nearly six million whereas Syria has over 22 million people.

Biden said "It has one-fifth the population that is Libya", 'it' presumably meaning Syria. Whereas it is the more or less the exact reverse. I wouldn't have said that was stating the obvious.

I didn't watch the VP debate, believe it or not it wasn't shown over here. I am just pointing out that despite being considerably smaller than Libya, Syria has nearly five times the population. I doubt that is stating the obvious. It is a common affliction among US politicians when it comes to geography and demographics, it's amazing really when you think of all the hours they must practice for the cameras.

I think this is just a bad transcription. Other transcriptions have add a comma in front of "that" to make it clearer. So it reads thusly:

It has one-fifth the population, that is Libya, one-fifth the population, five times as large geographically.

So it's clear that he's saying that Libya has one-fifth the population of Syria despite being five times as large geographically (which is off -- it's almost twice that).

That makes more sense.

This is how the Bush era "war on terrorism" is used to wage war everywhere on the planet...why is it up to us to put boots on the ground and pay for all these wars? Much better for us to let these people determine for themselves, without our interference, their own future and for us to concentrate on developing alternatives to oil and deal with our infrastructure problems. WTF? We aren't Rome...

So if Iran gets nuclear weapons and the Taliban take over in Pakistan, is that OK?

http://video.foxnews.com/v/1895278531001/how-should-the-us-handle-situation-in-syria

play the video (within the first 60 seconds), he says it just like the NPR transcript says he does. you sir are full of shite.

Since you like FOXNews:

BIDEN: Different country. It's a different country. It is five times as large geographically, it has one-fifth the population, that is Libya, one-fifth the population, five times as large geographically.

Edit: And after watching the video, I'd transcribe it thusly:

Different country. It's a different country. It is five times as large geographically, it has one-fifth the population -- that is Libya -- one-fifth the population, five times as large geographically.

Pretending that Biden doesn't know this stuff is really stupid.

NPR (my OP quote):

nigel's quote, which he claims is different:

Different country. It's a different country. It is five times as large geographically, it has one-fifth the population, that is Libya, one-fifth the population, five times as large geographically.

:palm:

let us put them closer together

The difference is the comma, dumbass.

LOL...the comma doesn't change anything.

dude, can you be a bigger ass kissing biden apologist? he clearly says syria is fives times as large --> geographically -- TWICE, not once, but twice.

this is the most pathetic spin i've seen from you and that really says something.
