Portrait of a Modern Feminist: Helen Smith

Are liberals the only ones that can be feminists? I'm sure that Condeleeza Rice would disagree about that.
You consider yourself liberal and you're not, she calls herself a feminist and she's not. You and she can call yourselves whatever you please but the proof is in the pudding.

Only to you. Men have been complaining for 500 years as change made muscles less valuable than brains...and they blame women for their demise all whilst around them the corporate world organizes and puts into practice policy that grinds us all into dust. Women and Men and Children are under attack by this system but you waste your time pointing fingers at your favorite scapegoat...women. You're pathetic.

You're just jealous because the voices are talking to me.

I'm not ignoring your posts, just trying to find some specific answers. So far this is what I found, from a PA legislator.

According to statistics released in 2009 by the U.S. Census Bureau, year-round, full-time working women in 2008 earned only 77 percent of the earnings of year-round, full-time working men, indicating little change or progress in pay equity. In Pennsylvania, women fare worse as they earn only 75 percent of their male colleagues...

According to an analysis of data in more than 300 classifications provided by the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics in 2001, women earn less in every occupational classification for which enough data is available, including occupations dominated by women (e.g., cashiers, retail sales, registered nurses and teachers).

this only speaks to what they earn overall. for the same amount of work, men and women come out equal. the wage gap in that regard is an absolute myth.

Here is a study which analyzes why there is a difference in take him pay between men and women:
http://www.consad.com/content/reports/Gender Wage Gap Final Report.pdf

It largely comes down to different career paths, a lot of women leaving the work force and returning at a later point, and other various factors.

I am not going to post the whole thing, it's long. But here is part of the forward by the U.S. department of labor that is most relevant:
Although additional research in this area is clearly needed, this study leads to the unambiguous
conclusion that the differences in the compensation of men and women are the result of a
multitude of factors and that the raw wage gap should not be used as the basis to justify
corrective action. Indeed, there may be nothing to correct. The differences in raw wages may be
almost entirely the result of the individual choices being made by both male and female workers.

Oh yeah, one other thing:
In Part-Time Jobs, Women Out-Earn Men:
http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/09/in-part-time-jobs-women-out-earn-men/

You make an interesting point, about women who left the workplace to raise kids. Of the women in your group, I wonder why none of their husbands stayed at home instead. Maybe the answer is that the husbands were earning more money at the time. And that brings us back to the same old dilemma.
Maybe or maybe it was because they wanted to be stay at home moms. A woman only has a small window of opportunity in our modern economy to enjoy that experience and many of them value that more than career opportunities and I can certainly understand that. Still, you can't have your cake and eat it too. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that wage discrimination based on gender does not exist or that the glass ceiling doesn't exist but rather just pointing out the statistical bias of the charts that were cited.

It's a myth that it's a myth. Only about 10% of the gap can be contributed to women leaving the work force to raise children. Further, that would never explain why single, childless women face an even larger wage gap than do married women.

But see what has happened on this thread is that Soc came and dropped a huge turd which he then ran away from and made no attempt to defend. The fact is that nobody here wants to defend the OP's main premise. Who knows if any of you even read the woman's article. Her premise is that men are going galt and refusing to attend college, accepting only low-wage jobs with no future, and making a life dedicated to poverty and video games in order to spite women.

Because this nonsense cannot be defended, this thread has turned into the male angst thread. With men posting a lot of nonsense about feminism, women, men, etc. They have complained about pretty much everything here. Made sweeping pronouncements with no evidence. "the truth is feminism today..." "men are fed up with..."

This thread really shows you that no one should be surprised that Rush Limbaugh got on the radio last week and blamed feminism for men's small penises. (another problem that not all men have, but apparently it is present in significant numbers among anti-feminists and the male angst crowd). I expect that to be brought up (no pun intended) next here.

I mean, just start a anxious male thread and whine away. Don't post something that is clearly laughable (not to mention very demeaning to men, most of whom have far more drive and dignity than the author believes of them) and then, in a clear attempt to exhaust every woman here, refuse to address the original claims and make the thread about everything and anything else.

If the women here ever, ever, made the statements about men that have been made by men about women on this thread, they would be called man-haters and desperate, bitter, rejected hags who couldn't get a man.

Well, you know what? I think there's something to that.

Feminism now is like fundamentalist christianity. If you go against the Dogma, your not really one of them. And your right Darla, I did post this exclusively to bait the true believers, just as I would an article by a Christian who would say that God doesn't condemn gay marriage. To watch the true believers bend and contort in ways to show how the person in the article is a REAL whatever.
That's absolutely not true. There are all sorts of feminst who argue against the academic orthodoxy. Have you read any of the works by Nina Hartley?

I got the new iPhone over the weekend. It is so effing awesome!

I also had sex.

So I'm good. But listen guys, if you aren't getting laid and it's making you this bitter that you'll actually embarrass yourselves like this, get an iPhone dude.

Just my advice. I can start an "Ask Darla" column here if need be.

Darla should be a mod instead of the misogynistic troll Soc, IMO.

I don't know how you get around the fact that many smart and educated women decide they would rather stay home and raise their family or take part-time work instead of staying on the fast track corporate career (after having children). As long as that continues to be the case it seems to me men are going to continue to dominate the ranks of upper management in large corporations.

I wore a Pass The ERA button all the way through high school even though it was no longer even up for ratification. I was VP of Students for Choice in College my first year and President my second year. At the time the only male to EVER hold those positions. The truth of the matter is Feminists (most) do still look for outrages. They spend a ton of time arguing over stupid shit, tilt at windmills and can't see that for the most part women have benefited from the civil rights movement more than black people did. I spent two days in a Women's Studies class listening to self absorbed women argue over how Woman/Women should be spelled. Was it Womyn? Womin? Every woman in that class stood to make .75 cents for every dollar I made and the spelling of women took center stage for 2 classes.
First of all you're making a generalization about ALL feminist that has something in common with all such generalizations. When applied to specific individuals it's demonstrably wrong. Not only that but your generalization would apply to virtually all political movements. Just because there is a percieved orthodoxy in a particular political movement doesn't mean that everyone who supports said political movement believes 100% in all aspects of that political movement. You're essentially allowing a handful of fanatics to color your view of a very broad based political movements. That's just down right silly Soc.

Personally I think any man who sits around and whines about having to live his life by "Womens Rules" is a pussy who should get kicked out of the mans club.

Holy shit, I just looked her up she certainly a lot easier on the eye than Dworkin, Friedan and French. Mind you didn't Andrea Dworkin work as a prostitute in Amsterdam for a while? I will have to read some of her stuff.
