Here in Palm Beach County we had terrable storms, I know the hurricane is far away, but we felt much worse effects than Tampa and many other cities.

My house had a branch down and the screen over the pool got blown out. The County planned on having school and Court today but at 4 this morning they cancelled both. My wife was scheduled to go to her usual Monday morning meeting at work about 75 miles north of here. We were under a tornado watch.

She called in and told them she was not comming due to dangerous weather conditions.

Her boss called her LIVID, screaming at her about missing the meeting. She is a top producer at the company beating out those who work full time in her sales numbers.

She gave it back to him, told him to "Fuck off" and not to treat her that way, to give her the benefit of the doubt, and informed him of offers from other companies begging her to come work for them. The asshole ended the conversation appologizing and begging her not to quit.

Ive been encouraging everyone to turn that shitty corporate attitude back on those fuckers. They act like they are all powerfull and the second you stand up to them, they are groveling little pissants! Workers of America need to stand up to the corporations! They should be begging us to work for them, not the other way around. The power rests with the worker, if they only knew it!

I work for a large corporation. I've never seen or heard of them treating people that way. A manager who spoke that way to one of our employees would probably get fired if their were wittnesses to the occasion.

if you are in such a position, then by all means do so

unfortunately, too many employers are exploiting the current depressed employment market

bummer

Using economic dispair to bully your employees is a very poor model. You will get zero loyality and when they can, they will immideatly go to work for your competition. My wife is considering her options today.

I guess she was pretty effective in telling the guy off, he closed the office at noon, telling the employees that it was unsafe to be out on the roads and not to come in tomorrow.

What an ass.

Larger corporations I believe, are more fearful of lawsuits and have tons of HR regulations. I don't think you'll see this sort of open abuse at say a Pfizer...but they do practice other kinds of abuse.

I think that mid-sized companies can be the most abusive. Probably some small companies as well.

She is in a regional mid-sized company. THe guy called her this morning and thanked her for bringing the weather to his attention.

My mom once worked for a man like that. She had a white car. She was pretty high up in management and was more than pressured to get to work in a very bad snow storm. A state of emergency had been called and she should have stayed home. Her white car got stuck on the Sunrise Highway. This was before cell phones and I often wonder what would have happened if she had a cell phone as she does now. She exited her car and someone stopped and picked her up while they waited for the police on the side of the road, or left to call the police at a payphone it's funny I cant remember that detail.

ANyway, it was a white out, the car was white, you can guess what happened. Someone through no fault of their own either, drove straight into it before the cops were able to get there. My mom's car was totaled. Thankfully the person who hit it was not badly injured, though there was some injury. If she had a cell phone and just called the cops and waited in the car would she be dead? I don't know.

My brother went into her company and had a talk with her boss. They still talk about that day at that company from what I hear.

I suspect they dont "encourage" employees from coming in during snow emergencies anymore...?

IN Florida you cannot sue your employer for negligance so I guess because they have limited liability many also take limited responsability.
