[/h] [h=4] Missouri Rep. Todd Akin, Republican candidate
[/h]
Why all the demands that Todd Akin quit?
Surely, he simply stated what many on the right believe.
Run, Todd, run.
Let the voters decide if conservative ideals are what Missouri wants.
This is what Akin said, and he meant it exactly:
“It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. You know, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”
Out of blind zealotry, Akin propagated the long disproved, patently absurd canard that, as a defense mechanism during rape, a woman’s body will mount physical defenses against pregnancy.
He then went repulsively further to draw a distinction between “legitimate” rape and other supposed forms of the crime, his point being that women who are victimized by “legitimate” rape rarely get pregnant , so his stance against abortion in cases of rape is no big practical deal.
