OT: Being 40 sucks

Yeah being active is everything. The best thing I ever did was put down the damned cigarettes and take up biking. In the winter I don't do it but I do spin classes instead. I think I would look like shit already if I was still smoking and guzzling diet coke instead of water. Diet coke is addictive btw and it will kill you.

Amazing how cutting out just diet coke and replacing it with water will affect you. I can only drink it in mixed drinks now... otherwise it tastes like crap. I was addicted to diet (though my preference was Diet Dr. Pepper).

If I ever get around to reducing my alcohol intake on weekends, maybe I can hit peak shape again.

you are scared they might beat you???
Oh hell I'm sure they'd beat me. I'm more scared about road rash or going over the handle bars and doing a face plant or having some nit wit who doesn't know the rules of pace lining cross my rear wheel and putting my ass on the road or taking out half the pack right in front of you when you're going 20+ mph. I don't bounce back from that shit like I used too. The thing I hated most about racing was the assholes who do stupid shit that causes others to wipe out. Not holding your line or not knowing how to advance your position really piss me off. Granted that's not as much a problem in masters racing as it is in Cat racing but even in masters racing you have people who won't listen to a damned thing.

Isn't it? I read this study that showed that women who drink it everyday, even if it's just one a day doesn't matter, increase their stroke and heart attack risk 40%! Wtf is in that to do that to you can you imagine? I gave it up right then, and it was hard but now I just drink water period. Well, and tequila.

Oh I know, I've had that happen and it really does make me want to push them. You are probably joking but I'm not.

I look at it both ways, the humbled side of me wants to knock them down.... but the other side of me says 'that is f'in sweet, not to mention inspirational to watch someone 20+ years older hammering out these races that I love'

there is one gentlemen, currently 84... he has slowed down a bit (obviously) but I have seen him at the same races for 10+ years now. He tells people they will know he died when he doesn't show up for one. I personally believe him. He still runs about a 10-10.5 minute mile. (thank God I am slightly faster than that... don't know if my ego could take that hit)

Isn't amazing the affect a little trim has on a guy? If we don't get any we tend not to give a rats ass about anything but give us a little lovin and we start to care a lot, don't we?

:0) Absolutely.

The sun shines brighter, the air feels cleaner, cats and dogs all sing together.

Yeah you're right, that is inspiring. Wow 84

In addition to all the nasty chemical crap in the diet sodas, not drinking water causes problems. Water, tea and coffee are about all I drink amymore. Football season is coming up, so beer will be added to my diet once a week, but thats about it. I don't even have a taste for soda anymore. When there is no good water and I drink one, it tastes like syrup.

lol... no, but in many running events out here they mark your calf with your age... always humbling to see that '64' go running by you. 'I swear, the old guy just tripped on his own'... don't know how many more times I can get away with saying that. :)
I know what you mean man. I once ran a sub 1:30 in a duathlon but in that race I was passed by a guy with a 67 on his leg (I was 37 at the time) on the first lap of the bike, meaning he would have had to of made up about 15 minutes on me. I passed him going into lap two and put some serious time on him on the second run but he still beat me over all by several minutes.

My main resistance to racing is you have to put at least 10 to 12 hours a week committed to training to be competative and that's pretty much a bare minimum too. That and I don't recover from falls like I used too.

Yeah it's weird if you get off that crap and then you have one out of the blue, it really does taste like the poison it is. I do still drink coffee though.

true, there is that aspect of it. Most of the rides/runs/obstacles courses I do tend to separate those who don't know what they are doing from those that do. That said, most of the riding races I participate in do not allow drafting at all, let alone forming up lines. But I do hate people like you described above.

When I first started riding, one of my buddies taught me real quick... he rode up beside me and jabbed me in the shoulder hard... damn near wrecked. I was like what the f? He said, rule number one, you never know what some asshole next to you is going to do. Learn the rules, ride by the rules, never assume the asshole next to you knows the rules.

I know what you mean cuz. I thank god I got into cycling back in the 80's. I've averaged around 3,000 miles per year, most years, since 1986 and look and feel far younger than my 50 years.

Not enough people value the temple they live in. Way too much time spent on the trappings.

Keep up the cycling brother. You are blessed to know this truth.

Yea I got that problem too. I love to sit out on my porch on Friday nights after work and down a six pack of a good microbrew while smoking a nice cigar. Which doesn't help your motivation on Saturday morning rides, does it? Oh well......balance! :)

I would venture to guess he could beat over half the population age 20-50 right now. Hands down. (provided it was at least a 5k... he is not going to win sprints)

I think he is an attention whore... he just loves the fact that the other racers and spectators go nuts every time they announce his name and age. ;)

I rode TOSRV here in Columbus one year and a 90 yo man road the whole 210 miles. He had an entourage like a rock star protecting him from the cross wind we had that day.

Out here it is always hard... I always place in the top 10% overall, but the damn little guys are too fast on the runs... so unless it is a century ride or some other endurance race, I don't stand a chance at placing in the top 3. So I simply count up the guys younger than me that I beat... while ignoring those older than me that kicked my ass :)

Excellent insights. I don't want to be younger either. This amazes me. When i was younger i was very into my looks and feared losing them. I would have thought I'd be a wrinkled old basket case by now. Now I'm in my 40's and not only do I think I look good, Im no longer afraid of losing that. I'm much smarter and self assured, I love my career, I have more money. I don't want to die but I find even my fear of that does lessen as time goes by. The only think I miss about my youth are the ones no longer here. I'd like to see my dad again. Other than that, no.

Excellent thoughts my fine sister. A major part of the awakening is knowing how fine you are.

I've also come to terms with death .. not just my own, but the loss of the people I've loved and cared for.

Nature is the most powerful force humans will ever know.

Lol... yeah, though I have been good lately to restrict myself to Saturday nights so that I get the Sat morning swim and ride in. Sundays are normally my vball days... which involves some beverage consumption... but since we play 5-7 hours I think a few on Sunday won't hurt. That said, football is coming up and that is where my couch potato status hits... I am an addict to football. It could be the two worst teams and I would find some excuse to watch it.

Damned sound advice. I do agree with you that multisport and time trial events are a lot less risky. Still and all....I love pack riding.
