Anonymous Posting

I don't know if anyone who posts here keeps up with what's going on in the real world. You know, the rest of the internet. Anyway, there has been a big movement to discourage anonymous posting. Many sites have suffered for years with terrible comment sections fouled up with horrific racism, misogyny, threats, and various cruelties. Salon.com comes to mind for me. But it's all over the net. So now I have noticed that when I go to read an article at many sites, instead of not being able to make a comment because I never registered and won't bother to now, I am automatically signed in via facebook. At first I didn't like this. And I would never have thought I'd want to post non-anonymously.

But I like it. I like it a lot. I definitely see myself moving over to a 100% non-anonymous board(s). I don't think any message boards have done it yet. It's just news sites and blogs. Of course you can still create a fake fb account, or a fake twitter. This doesn't end abuse, but it greatly discourages it. There is a huge difference in the comment sections where everyone is posting with their fb accounts. So far no one has even called me a c*nt! Never once have I been called a man-hater. I post the same way I do here. First of all I think just having that picture of yourself right out there humanizes everyone to each other. And of course some of the behavior we have seen over the years, does anyone believe ID or Loyal would be spewing the things they spewed if their co-workers and neighbors could conceivably read it some day? (Their families probably know all too well) NO WAY.

I understand the argument for anonymity. You don't want your boss to see what your political opinions, blah blah blah. But I think that's very exaggerated and most people could post with their names. They just don't want to.

Especially with the election coming up I will definitely be moving more and more to sites that post with your FB. (You do not have to show your activity to your fb friends, so they are not buried under an onslaught of your Paul Ryan rantings). I would love to see a message board like JPP move to this format. Though I know JPP never will. But I think there's an opportunity there. People really are social animals and if you give them the opportunity to post as themselves, a lot of them will take it. It's more fun.

But I wonder what others here think, and if anyone here would ever do it.

It's fucking bullshit, is what it is, Darla! This is a really bad direction to be heading in, and it just smacks of fascism. We need our anonymity, we fucking need it!

Eh, I don't see the need for anonymity as much as I see the need to protect some privacy. Yes, there is a difference. I don't want just anyone to have my address or know my employer. But I have no problem being held accountable for my comments.

Besides, if you say the right things you anonymity will be gone anyway. Remember KingRaw? He posted here and made some threats. I bet he wished he was anonymous by the time the feds finished with him.

I feel that as we begin to move over to a mostly non-anonymous internet, we wouldn't have the same concerns we have now about employers and such. Though I understand worrying about someone having your address. I guess it will never be right for everybody but I feel it is right for me now.

The only time it gets weird is when your comments get added to other sites. I had a friend comment on an article. Since it linked to her FB page, it went up there as well. When I added my comment on her FB page, the comment also showed up on the comments at the end of the article. That was a bit odd, but still no biggie

All of us in the Trinity have been pretty open on this board. We talk about our jobs, schools, locations, relationships/families, and stuff like that. By discussing my Air National Guard / NORAD stuff, I gave a certain individual an opportunity to harrass me, but that's about it. I still like being Threedee, rather than my real self, and although I have tossed my name around a little (Drew, and I have occasioned to drop my last as well), I've never been too worried.

Hell, I still call/text Grind on occassion because he posted his phone number.

Got to agree with that. Non anonomus posting is much easyer to censor.Besides Face book doent know if you provide your real name or not.

haha, yeah that's a glitch.

I am not worried about my boss/friends/coworkers etc... seeing my posts. I would be more worried by the psychos out there not liking a particular view/comment and going off. You have experienced what some will do... and that was with you being anonymous. F' that.

Wow. I wish I had Grinds phone #. I don't have anyone to call at 3am when I've been out drinking.

I think we should all be a little circumspect about giving personal information. I remember too well Ice Dancer and Loyal and a few others. I would not trust very many here with personal info. Not because there is anything to hide, I sometimes wish there was, but because this site is not monitored sufficiently well to prevent abuses. (I really do not know how one could prevent abuses actually).

I feel as if posting with your actual identity would prevent things from getting to that point, but maybe I am wrong. You do bring up a good point.

My forum is different. We are a group of people who knew each other before the forum came into being. We self-moderate ourselves. No bans, no deleted threads yet.

I post under my real name and always have, mind you it helps to have the Atlantic Ocean to protect against loonies.

With 99% of the people I would agree. You and I have had our share of hostilities, yet we both know who the other is in real life and have never said word one about it. Which given how badly you were getting your ass kicked is a credit to your character to have not caved to that temptation.

It is the 1% that worry me.

Yeah, but we know we can just find you at the BP headquarters bowing down to your beloved masters... it isn't that far a hop across the pond ;)

I love how delusional you are. This is like an 80yo in a wheelchair claiming he just kicked my ass in tennis.
