Trayvon Martin's parents seek money from crime victims fund

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Trayvon Martin's mother has asked for an undisclosed amount of money from a state fund set up to help crime victims with things like funeral expenses and counseling, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

The documents, obtained through a public records request, show Sybrina Fulton applied for the compensation benefits after her son was fatally shot last February by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in a gated community in Sanford, Fla. It was not immediately clear how Martin's family would use the money.

The state Attorney General's Office, which administers the Crimes Compensation Trust Fund, refused to disclose the sum sought by Fulton and her former husband, Tracy Martin. Payouts can reach $30,000.

another bijou meltdown because she can't discuss things in a rational adult manner.

run along and take your temper tantrum with you little girl.

A crime was committed, moron. All that's yet to be determined are the details of that crime.

I am definitely not a lawyer but I was under the impression that if an act is considered self-defense, or justifiable homicide, that is in fact not considered a crime? I don't know how the police track such an act when collecting statistical data. I also don't know how this crime fund works but if forced to speculate I would think that money would come available after a trial and some sort of guilty verdict.

More than likely that's the protocol.

Only one of them can claim self-defense. Obviously Maritn's already been handed his sentence, regardless of whether or not it was he who was acting in self defense. The burden of proof is on the prosecution. What's already known is that Zimmerman lies more often than he tells the truth.

Of course, Florida's turned out to be quite a hamlet of morons, so who knows what kind of jury they'll get?

so now you're backing off your claim that a crime was committed? good for you.

Either way their son's still dead by Zimmerman's hand and his 'gun rights'. What part of that do you not get?
i guess that part I don't get is martins parents getting money from a CRIME VICTIMS FUND when it's still not known whether their son is the crime victim or the perpetrator. maybe you can explain that?

Homicide. Details are why Zimmerman's on trial.

Homicide is not always a punishable act under criminal law, and is different to murder from a formal legal point of view.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homicide

Although the term homicide is sometimes used synonymously with murder, homicide is broader in scope than murder. Murder is a form of criminal homicide; other forms of homicide might not constitute criminal acts. These homicides are regarded as justified or excusable. For example, individuals may, in a necessary act of Self-Defense, kill a person who threatens them with death or serious injury, or they may be commanded or authorized by law to kill a person who is a member of an enemy force or who has committed a serious crime. Typically, the circumstances surrounding a killing determine whether it is criminal. The intent of the killer usually determines whether a criminal homicide is classified as murder or Manslaughter and at what degree.
