Our Gun Rights

I've been trying to make restitution ever since. Last summer I saw a tiny bird on the lawn. After rescuing it I checked out it's nest. There was a hole in the bottom so I stuffed some rags in the hole so it wouldn't fall out again. The next day it was out and the rags had fallen. I set the bird on a branch. The bird was shivering/scared. Cats come in my back yard so I knew the bird wouldn't survive on the ground. A few days later I was in my office on the phone with my wife looking out the window and noticed the baby bird was in the fish pond and drowning. I ran out and saved it, again. I held it upside down so the water would drain from its lungs. HA! Anyway, by now the bird knew me so it opened it's mouth so I would feed it. A few days after that I never saw it again. I like to think it moved on. :)

You can use a plastic bowl to hold teh shape of the nest on the outside. That will make it more sturdy and keep the baby birds safer until they learn to fly. It looks strange, but it works. we did several a few years ago after I called a friend asking how we could save the bird nests after a string of very bad storms.

There you go again, with the greatest of respect. Gun clubs are not, here anyway, places whose trust is questionable. They are managed by a board of proven responsible civilians and senior police officers. There are one or two ranges where gun nuts can willy wave and pretend they are well hung before handing their guns back for safety and going to the pub for a beer. It would be much more difficult for a criminal to get his hands on a gun club gun than on a privately owned gun no matter how many locks you have on the gun safe.
I do wish Americans would learn to like each other and not see everyone and everything as a life threatening enemy.

And when the racoon is trying to kill my dog, or a coyote is stalking my neighbors chickens or calves, should I just wave at them and ask them to wait until I get back from the gun club?

Perhaps, when I am out of town, my wife will be safer if she and my daughter go stay at the gun club?

Thanks, we are fine with my gun safe. Few burglars use a forklift or big 4 or 5 guys with them.

Again... the Second Amendment doesn't say it's for the purpose of sportsmen to enjoy recreation.

Life has more to offer than the second, or any other, amendment if you just stop long enough to open your eyes.

Lowaicue, I live a very full and happy life. I have a rewarding career. I hunt, hike, fish, canoe, read, write, exercise, meditate, worship, cook, study, and have a great extended family. I love where I live and the beauty that surrounds me. The few drawbacks being that I am gone too much and my wife is home alone living 20 miles from town. The few issues with that is some conflicts with the local wildlife and an extended response time from law enforcement. My guns (safely locked away) cure both issues.

1. You do not need a dog, therefore you dont need to have racoons. 2. If your neighbour is having trouble keeping his chickens safe that is his problem, not yours. Give him some cages.
If your wife is in danger when you leave her, you are living in the wrong country. Move.

That sounds great. But you are still frightened for your and your wife's safety.
I am not and I never have been. (I dont even know your wife :) )

I have already said many times that I can understand guns for self defence and hunting, it is the whole bat shit crazy mumbo jumbo about divine rights and the second amendment which I find mindboggling.

But that's because you're British and your culture is used to being controlled.

Whether I need a dog or not, I want my dog and love my dog. More to the point, she needed me. She is a rescue. in fact, all 3 dogs are rescues. The raccoons will be here regardless.

My neighbor's problems are my problems. That is what being a neighbor is all about.

My wife is in no danger. She has a gun. If her ex starts crap again, or someone tries to do her harm she will handle the problem.

We are hurting no one by owning guns. Rather than abandoning our dogs, moving away from this wonderful place, and abandoning our neighbors to their own problems, we have a few firearms.

You may not like it and you have your opinion that it somehow makes us less civilized or whatever. I respectfully disagree.

Well they WERE human beings, though.

But you can't objectively evaluate history from the perspective that people realized what they didn't. The endowed rights didn't apply to what wasn't understood to be 'people' just as rights don't apply to horses and cattle today. That may seem harsh to you from today's perspective, but that's the point, in 1776, they didn't have today's perspective, theirs was much different, and it took many years to overcome and for perspectives to change.

The rest of the trash you wrote is not worth the time for me to respond. The nation was founded on the principle that all men are created equal and endowed rights by their Creator, and it is what sets us apart from any other nation on the planet. We went from being an insignificant new start-up country in 1776, to the world's greatest superpower ever known to man, in just over 200 years, far exceeding much older and better-established dynasties. Idiots? HARDLY!

That's a sweet story! Hopefully the baby did move on and survive. Nature's brutal enough without human beings visiting their own sick cruelty upon them. Good for you and your soft heart. :)

I have re-forested most of my suburban back yard. Trees include pine, maple, birch, magnolia, weeping mulberry, spruce, apple, pear and plum and a huge grape vine. There are raspberry and blackberry bushes along the foundation. It's nice to hear the birds in the morning for whom we leave the fruit. And there's the fish pond with a fountain which the birds use and which is the summer home for my gold fish.

The yard is still a work in progress. I plan to build a waterfall and replace the fountain. Then lay some pavers to make a patio at one side of the pond.

I'm on a corner lot with two huge blue spruce in front. While they are great I could still see the street so I planted a few more trees. HA! Now when I sit in the living room I'm completely obscured. One retired neighbor commented they love the way I "decorated" as it reminds them of the country.

The back yard is also surrounded by a 10 foot cedar hedge and we have bunnies visit. Wild rabbits, all sizes, from big adults to babies.

I'm sure some neighbors are not pleased. The neighbors diagonal to me have their trees cut and shaped and the other neighbor has a lawn so neat my place must look like a jungle. One the other hand the neighbor to my left is not all that particular. He's a lawyer and she's a teacher and she told me they don't have time to garden. When I asked if I could go on their property to trim the other side of my hedge she said to do whatever I want. HA! They appreciated me doing it.

And that's my slice of life. A country boy in suburbia. A lover of nature; animals, trees and women. Not necessarily in that order. :)

In other words, you enjoy killing animals and need lots of different kinds of guns because certain guns are better for killing certain animals. Terrific. You justified your 'need' for many guns.

I don't eat animals, I don't hunt, I think the sport is disgusting, so there's no point in continuing the discussion. You justified your need for all your guns. I won't argue that point with you.

Because you don't eat meat, means that there's something wrong with those that hunt and eat what they kill (except for the coyotea??

WELL, aren't you special. :D

There's nothing 'sporting' about it. It's disgusting. It should make you feel ill, so good for you. ;)

Yes; because it's so much better to let those animal populations get out of hand and then allowing them to die from starvation and disease.

Much more humane. :palm:

But if it was so little, it probably didn't move on and one of your cats probably ate it.
The cat thanks you.

I was told not to respond and I have respected those wishes and let Winterborn hash this out so far (he does a good job of it) but this sounds so much like a parent giving his child an "I know better than you do" talk that I couldn't resist. It also sounds like what some want the government to step in and do as well. No thanks. It is freedom and with freedom comes responsibility.

I also live in a rural area and am 30 minutes from any law enforcement or emergency response. We that live out here have created our own fire department. We can't do everything the larger, city departments can do but in the 20+ years that I have been involved I can count over 15 houses that we still have in the area because of our efforts. Some of us volunteer fire fighters are also first responders to help in the event of a medical emergency plus we know all of the nurses in the area and can call them in to help until an ambulance arrives.

We don't even think about the critters that's may come upon our places and harass our livestock or pets...we have weapons to dispatch them if needed. And yes, heaven forbid that someone should want to do us harm, we will also use those weapons to deter and/or detain, if possible, ... and dispatch them if necessary.

The nearest shooting range that is equipped with lockers or safes is 150 miles from here.

And so now we are back at that point where everyone looks at the issue as if everyone's situation were their own and throws their own ideas for solutions out there. No room for compromise, no room for looking at it through another's eyes....it's my way or the highway. That hasn't ever worked to well, has it?

You are nuts if you have one gun, unless your gun or guns are kept at a sporting gun club under lock and key and never taken home. Then you can stroll over every Saturday and pop Coke cans off tree stumps or whatever you do.
you can show us your doctorate in psychology to verify your diagnosis?

I think the following sums it up. Haiku wrote in msg #46,

Assuming there is such a thing as inherent rights I believe they're the result of enlightenment. When people have evolved sufficiently and are aware then they have certain rights. For one to say they not only have no obligation to help others but to oppose those (government) who do believe there is an obligation it shows they have not evolved.

But I am the eternal optimist. :)
which in the end will be your downfall. I needed help two times in my life and the government said 'sorry, can't help you'. so fuck you and fuck the government. i'll make it on my own and so will you, or you'll die.

Fine, they weren't the government. They were the folks who wrote rules and after the government formed it took those rules and made them law and some went on to be the government.
and with this bullshit statement, you just found yourself on the heap of the uneducated with rana, howey, and bijou.
