Republicans are full of shit

Rationalist

Hail Voltaire
As Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) (LMT)’s chief predicts he may have to fire 10,000 workers under across-the- board federal spending cuts, a familiar voice is warning Republican leaders that U.S. defense readiness is at stake.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said at a private meeting with Senate Republicans yesterday that the projected cuts totaling $500 billion could be “devastating” to military modernization and planning, South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham told reporters.

Cheney, 71, said defense spending is “not a spigot you can turn on and turn off, that you need to keep money flowing in a predictable way so you can plan for the next war,” Graham said after the Senate Republicans’ weekly luncheon. They heard from the former vice president, who was President George H.W. Bush’s defense secretary from 1989 to 1993.

This is unadulterated horseshit. Republicans are quick to cut social spending (which is necessary), but somehow a "$500 billion" cut to the military budget (which would be implemented over the next decade) is the end of the world. I, for one, am pleased that the military will automatically be cut, because it is the only way it will ever be cut.

The US has had more than enough bullshit wars for oil. It is time to bring the troops home and return military spending to a sane level.

Perpetual war isn't just a mindset and a livelihood; it's an ingrained culture. This is nothing new. Defense jobs are sacrosanct while all others are on the chopping block, and that isn't just because of MIC greed - it's the primitive 'superpower' groupthink.

What's sad is the Republicans used to be the party of peace. Eisenhower specifically warned us of the dangers of the MIC.

That ship sailed long ago - so long ago, in fact, that I don't ever remember them being the party of peace.

Unfortunately, neither parties are the party of peace. Both wage bullshit wars that do not affect American interests at all.

Defense could easily be cut by 30% without affecting the readiness of our military. Like the Dept of Education, far too much money is wasted on admin.

Hey I'm all for a strong national defense but history is replete with examples of what happens to great nations who over extend themselves militarily. It's not good. We can't afford to be the worlds policeman. However Darth Cheney is right. It's not just a spigot you can turn off. Either from a defense preparedeness or an economic point of view.

Completely irrelevent. Do you think Ike would stand a snowballs chance in hell of getting nominated in today's Republican party?

Sure, he would just tout his military credentials, and a bunch of supporters would run ads calling his opponents wimpy, girly-men (to quote from Ahnold). Colin Powell could have easily secured the GOP nod in 1996 had his wife allowed him to run. I suppose they are regretting that decision 12 years later...

That can also be said about democrats. They USED to be the party of peace.

Immoral and unnecessary war goes on unabatted by the change of the letter behind the president's name. The Democratic Party is every bit as warmongering as the republicans .. and the blame for that goes directly to the base itself .. democrats who should know better.

Before anyone gets too deep into how ugly the republicans are on feeding the military/industrial complex and war .. best take a look in the mirror and ask yourself how did the Democratic Party become the party of perpetual war. If you question that .. take a look at the perpetual state of war we are in today with the so-called Nobel Prize Winner for "peace" at the helm. "D" behind his name.

Iran is on the horizon.

I recognize that this is something that democrats don't even want to talk about unless it points the finger at republicans .. which is one of the reasons why I'm not a democrat.

Sorry, that's not my problem. My problem is the senseless, horrific, and unnecessary wars this country wages for profit. My problem is the lack of commitment and principle that democrats used to have .. but has now been sold out to the mindfuck of lesser evil.
