Even more worrying, IMO, is this:

The use of drones is taking off in America.

Local governments and private businesses see them as a cheap and effective way of maintaining an eye from the sky.


But will the drones be fully under their control?


A college professor and his students say not necessarily.


A civilian drone aircraft was hijacked by Prof. Todd Humphreys and his graduate students at the University of Texas.


They were able to hack into the GPS signals of the drone, not only manipulating its flight path while flying over White Sands, New Mexico, but later landing it.


Humphreys told CBS News, "You can think of this as hijacking a plane from a distance. (It's) as if you're at the controls of the plane, because you've now captured the autopilot's sense of its own navigation solution. And you can manipulate it left or right, up or down."


The exercise was done in conjunction with the Department Of Homeland Security and would seem to raise concerns about vulnerabilities in our domestic use of drones or unmanned aerial vehicles.


"I see this as causing trouble in the skies," Humphreys said. "I wouldn't want to be living under skies where this was that easy to do."

i predict that there will be a way to encode signals to prevent hijacking, oth, has the u s of a military found a way to prevent this and will they share?

The military GPS signal is very different from the public GPS signal.

Nobody has hacked the former.....yet.

I'm not so sure that was a hacking, or Pakistan would be downing our drones by now. I think that was a malfunction.

Of course, we'll never get the truth out of the military

i definitively agree that it is highly unlikely that we will ever know, nor am i sure that we should know
 
you're going into the drones mode century. I was reading about HAND LAUNCHED drones, that can be used on the battlefield, or by local users.
It's all warm and fuzzy, drones circling around capturing heat ( growhouses), looking down at detailed crim scenes, or just omnipresent surveillance.

Say good bye to any assumed rights of privacy, even when you walk out on your patio or carport. So smoke the doobie inside..

It's a new tech, just another way of intrusion into privacy rights.
PPl don't really care, they jump on the ACLU for defending a KKK march, because they hate the KKK. (rightfully so), and miss the fact "freedom to organize"

The Franklin quote says it all, but when Congress allows a Unitary POTUS, and all this tech is kinna....swept aside by SCOTUS..you wind up living in a comparatable state of privacy that existed during the USSR.

We're stupid ppl, we don't "zealously guard our individual rights" -we'd rather pick a partisian side. Rather go into perpetual war with Islamic fundies.

This is worrisome.
 
If the government didn't have drones someone would figure out how to build them. Picture a car dealer flying one over the neighborhood and a few days later you get a letter saying they noticed your car was an older model and they have a sale going on. Or a landscape company soliciting on the phone saying they noticed your lawn was looking a little brown in spots. Or a roofing company dropping a flyer in your mail box saying they noticed your roof needed repair.

Home Depot noticed your back deck looks a little scruffy and they have stain on sale. And it looks like your B-B-Q has seen better days. :)

this is my second post on the subject

how long before our neighbors have them and send them over to spy on us at night

is it illegal to discharge a shotgun at a drone if you think that it is a ufo?
