Is a man's life worth less than a 12 pack of beer?

better not steal. if you are dumb enough to steal shit from others with this law in place, then you obviously aren't a bright citizen and it's likely best you are put down.

This is really the point. If you don't wanna get shot by store clerks, dont wander in and steal from them. I'm guessing this particular guys life wasn't worth that much to begin with

Committing crimes is a bit like the lottery, except when you win, it's a Darwin Award. Sometimes society gets saved the cost of a trial.

I have to admit it's sad that this happened. I wouldn't have shot him. Here are the only cases in which I would shoot someone:

1) If they threaten my safety or that of my family;
2) If my country was being invaded

I'd like to think that, given the opportunity, he could have turned his life around and made something of himself...although that's probably unlikely.

While I agree that it is possible for him to have turned his life around and I would like for him to have had that opportunity, I can't say I wouldn't have shot him. I would have first tried to detain, and if that didn't work I would have tried to disable, perhaps with a shot. Of course, again, we don't know the thief's reaction when confronted by the pursuer. Mayhap something in the confrontation warranted a shot...which proved fatal.

I can't speak for the laws where you live; but in AZ it's against the law to shoot someone with the intent to wound or maim.
If you're going to shoot, it better be to kill; or you can be sued by the criminal, if he survives.

So stealing beer merits a citizen-applied death penalty? No trial? No evidence?

What part of "we'll let the courts decide" says that?

What due process of any court appointed a 19-year-old store clerk judge, jury, and executioner?

Don't we have police, prosecutors and courts to deal with petty theft?

Instead, in Texas, it's OK to kill someone over "property"...in this case, some beer.

Again, a question designed to evoke emotion. An appeal to emotion is a logical fallacy. As I pointed out earlier one can say this about any time anybody has been killed, it is simply worthless nonsense.

Were they there?

So you do not believe that the kid who shot this person should face a trial to find if it was justified under this law?

Yet you responded.

Were they there?

Were they called? Not until after the summary execution, apparently.

Yet there will be a trial which will decide if the kid was justified in shooting this other guy, we'll let the courts decide.

Even if the killer is charged, which is not certain, how will that benefit the dead man?

You, apparently, will not.

I won't? When did I say that?

Is it OK?
