1. Where’s the progression in “reproductive rights” when the crowning event of reproduction is tossed in the shit can?
2. Where’s the progression in strangling oil production when there’s no viable backup plan in place?
3. Where’s the progression in destroying the Private Sector?
4. Where’s the progression in expanding law enforcement while a liberal President and liberal Senate majority are in power?
5. Where’s the progression in Socialism?
6. Where’s the progression in destroying the definition of marriage?
7. Where’s the progression in confiscating a perfectly good lunch from home and replacing it with a perfectly unacceptable lunch from the school?
8. Where’s the progression in announcing plans for space travel when we’ve already scrapped our space program?
9. Where’s the progression in banning 32 oz soft drinks when 32 oz of alcohol is still legal to purchase?
10. Where’s the progression in attacking the tobacco industry, while attempting to legalize marijuana?
11. Where’s the progression in 46 different taxes?
12. Where’s the progression in progressivism?

most? really?

so progress is more safety, less freedom?

Yes, most. And most don't have your paranoid view that every minor restriction = a wholesale sellout of liberty.

Society is a contract. Most consider restrictions & regulations acceptable if they make the world safer for all.

2. Where’s the freedom in lying when domestic oil production today is at an eight year high?
3. Where’s the freedom in our teachers making less than most civilized countries?
4. Where’s the freedom in denying benefits to 9/11 law enforcement first responders?
5. Where’s the freedom in the Republican Party?
6. Where’s the freedom in telling two people in love what they can't be http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2012/...-should-be-able-to-discriminate-against-gays/equal to their fellow Americans?
7. Where’s the freedom in denying a healthy lunch to school children?
8. Where’s the freedom in denying scientific space stations?
9. Where’s the freedom in denying comprehensive obesity counseling and wellness exams?
10. Where’s the freedom in denying anti-smoking programs and medical marijuana funding?
11. Where’s the freedom in the top 1% paying less THAN 1% in taxes?
12. Where’s the freedom in being a Republican?

What is the freedom in the top 1% paying less than 1% in taxes? So freedom equals paying more taxes? Good one Legion.

I guess that its all in what you veiw as progress. Personally I veiw all of that as progress. Exsept for the further building the American police state thats all on the right wing republicans.

Most consider a safer world to be progress.

Adding years to a life does not add life to years.

Becoming wussified versions of ourselves at the cost of vital freedom isn't something most want to call progress.

It's a balance. As Ben Franklin stated "Those who would give up essential liberties for security deserve neither." Having said that, Onceler's point is correct just as STY's is grossly exagerated. A regulation intended to benefit the public is not in and of itself an abrogation of personal liberties. They can be though if taken to far. The USAPATRIOT Act for example with it's disregard for habeous corpus rights, but this notion that the government regulating commerce or ensuring the public safety is, in principle, sacrificing essential liberties is a nonsense argument.
