I understand your reasoning, however, I disagree with it. If we consider things such as war, famine etc, as "to date", then there is a huge risk of undermining something far worse than has been historically recorded or happened. "As of now"....IMO, means nothing if this thing is actually worse than the flu. I also believe people don't take the flu seriously. I was one of them. I got my first flu shot in over a decade this year.
You present facts to date. Fair enough. However, these virus can take weeks to detect or manifest itself. IMO, if this virus becomes as common as the flu, we are going to lose millions, maybe tens of millions of people.
I do wonder, however, at some of the extreme measures being put in place. Like closing all in person school for over a month.
What are your thoughts on this?
