"What is patriotism? Let us begin with what patriotism is not. It is not patriotic to dodge the draft and to mock war heroes and their families. It is not patriotic to discriminate against active-duty members of the armed forces in one's companies, or to campaign to keep disabled veterans away from one's property. It is not patriotic to compare one's search for sexual partners in New York with the military service in Vietnam that one has dodged. It is not patriotic to avoid paying taxes, especially when American working families do pay. It is not patriotic to ask those working, taxpaying American families to finance one's own presidential campaign, and then to spend their contributions in one's own companies. It is not patriotic to admire foreign dictators. It is not patriotic to cultivate a relationship with Muammar Gaddafi; or to say that Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin are superior leaders. It is not patriotic to call upon Russia to intervene in an American presidential election. It is not patriotic to cite Russian propaganda at rallies." Timothy Snyder

'Trump’s Re-election Message Is White Grievance'

'It’s hard to know if Republicans like this are truly naïve or if they’re just pretending so they don’t have to admit what a foul enterprise they’re part of. Because Trump does indeed have a re-election message, a stark and obvious one. It is “white power.”'

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/02/opinion/trump-racism-2020-election.html

'But Trump understands that he became a significant political figure by spreading the racist lie that Barack Obama was really born in Kenya. He launched his history-making presidential bid with a speech calling Mexican immigrants rapists and adopted a slogan, “America First,” previously associated with the raging anti-Semite Charles Lindbergh. Throughout the 2016 campaign, he won the invaluable prize of earned media with escalating racist provocations, which his supporters relished and which captivated cable news.'"

Excellent historical commentary.

The pied piper of the easily led is going off the rails with Covid-19 and the economy. But in the background he has hurt Americans in a number of ways. Read up and pay attention, he has to go.

As a white I've never understood white grievance and yet it palpable in conversations with Trump supporters. A sense in which somehow they are forgotten and neglected. Seems un-American to me as well as weak.

There is little question Trump is the worst president in modern times and may be the worst of all time. His political hangers on are afraid of his base for his base is grievance guided and often uneducated. Of course the monied will always follow him for it is money not America they care for. Trump may be dumb but he knows hate and he knows greed and he plays them. Anyone know how the 'wall' is doing?

'It Was All A Lie' 'how The Republican Party Became Donald Trump'

"Stevens has been working in Republican politics for decades. Looking back at the age of 65, he regrets being “focused on winning without regard for the consequences.”"

'An epitaph, of interest to all politics junkies, for a formerly venerable party by a champion-turned-gravedigger.'

Trump is not a smart man, he is not educated, he is not well read, he is pretty much a phony who plays on buzz words and the grievances of the wannabees. Say 'socialism' and the uneducated follow. Trump plays to a base as unread as he. As un-thoughtful as he. As un-American values as he. Oddly the writer below a fan of this nonsense saw the bore last evening. Ironic huh.

'In RNC 2020 speech, Trump was the one thing he usually isn’t: Boring'

"There was no flow, no argument, no central core. He praised himself and he attacked Joe Biden, just as you’d expect. But he didn’t build a case for himself or a case against Biden — and it’s the construction of such cases that provide the dramatic structure a major speech needs to engage both the head and the heart.

For someone who relishes drama, Trump provided none."

I agree! Trump most assuredly is the worst, most incompetent, most classless president we have ever had...

...and I hope that no one ever beats him out as being even worse, even more incompetent and classless than he.

I also agree enthusiastically and completely with Robert Anton Wilson's quoted comment in your signature line.

Watching Trump is like watching someone who knows nothing about anything and yet has a knack somehow and someway to sway people. Admittedly the uneducated and ideological people but still, even the uneducated should see the man is an empty figure. How did America elect such a empty person? 2016 demonstrated something deep Americans can be fooled. Another example below of his incompetence as president and the rise of violence he seems to glory in as it gives him someone to point to as the enemy, fellow Americans that is.

'They tried to get Trump to care about right-wing terrorism. He ignored them.'

'Officials at the Department of Homeland Security waged a yearslong internal struggle to get the White House to pay attention to the threat of violent domestic extremists. Frustrated, they gave up on the Trump administration.'

PS the Portland major sure called him out.

I agree, he is the worst president ever.

Thanks for the suggested reading. It all looks great.

PS the Portland major sure called him out.

He claims the violence is in Democratic Cities.

What he's not mentioning is that they are in America and he is the President of the United States of America. It is part of his con-man playbook to blame others when things go badly, and to also take credit when they go well. Smart people can see right through him.

Dear Trump Cult

An American president who sends love letters to a ruthless dictator? And admires another one.

'#Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump’ Review: A Documentary Dissects the President’s Malignant Narcissism'

https://variety.com/2020/film/reviews/unfit-the-psychology-of-donald-trump-review-1234744187/

"The film details the four qualities in Trump that define that syndrome: his paranoia (the feeling that any journalist who asks him a challenging question, or any staff member who doesn’t kiss his ring, is out to get him); his anti-social personality disorder (the constant lying, the lack of remorse about even the most destructive things he does); the sadism (the thousands of vicious attacks and insults in his tweets)...."

Never mind - he has produced some of the most incredible lying ever seen in history; it is pouring out of the trumpers now, and is a sobering indication of how low humanity can sink in what is still supposed to be a democracy as yet (though of course some of the Constitutionalists will assure us your Country was never supposed to be any such thing.

I am an American. For the most part, I've always been very proud of that fact and of our country. That is why I want a national leader who represents me and that pride. President Obama restored that feeling when he took off. Once again, America was admired throughout most of the world, and feared where we needed to be feared.

Now? We've fallen even below the dismal W years when we were despised for our unwarranted invasion of Iraq. We are a laughingstock. Even worse, we are pitied for our horrendous virus death toll and for the corrupt and impotent leadership at the top.

Biden was not my first choice. But I will vote for him if for no other reason than restoring pride in our nation both in our own hearts and in the eyes of the world.
