I'd say that this issue for leftists actually dates back to 1972. It often gets forgotten that Nixon likewise won in a complete landslide that year. However, leftists subsequently managed to "get him" via what is now known as "Watergate". They effectively overturned the clear mandate of We The People because of it.

Then, even with the "Watergate" screw job against Nixon, and even with the reaction to Ford pardoning him, Carter STILL only BARELY beat Ford.
