Watching the implosion of the Musk Mythos has been kind of shocking. I remember thinking long ago he was a kind of Henry Ford for the new Millennium, unfortunately that may be closer to the mark than anyone is comfortable with given his current preferred association.
It's stripped a lot of the veneer off the myth of Musk as some sort of brilliant genius toiling to make the world better. When people start looking closer because of all the press you realize he actually made his nut by being able to create a piece of software about 30 years ago which got bought up at a ridiculous price by a larger company during the go-go early internet bubble days. That gave him enough money to start being Elon Musk. Tesla was another person's design and invention. Musk bought it. His entire myth rests on getting lucky once and then buying other people's stuff to make himself look bigger.

You mean for the software package he created in the 90's? From what I can tell that's like the last thing he actually "invented".
He did do a good job with the money he got from that venture, though. So he's no slouch when it comes to buying other people's technology and rebranding it.
