If you're not a health expert

Something like 120? But it doesn't change anything about trump's lies, O Prince of Prevarication. :D

In a March 12 meeting with the prime minister of Ireland, Trump repeated the sentiment.

“If you go back and look at the swine flu, and what happened with the swine flu, you’ll see how many people died, and how actually nothing was done for such a long period of time, as people were dying all over the place,” he said. “We’re doing it the opposite. We’re very much ahead of everything.”

Trump is correct on the number of H1N1 cases and deaths, but it’s misleading to compare those figures to the current outbreak of COVID-19, which has just begun. It’s also not true that the Obama administration did nothing or waited a long time to act on the H1N1 influenza pandemic. In 2009, a new H1N1 influenza virus cropped up out of season, in late spring. Because of genetic similarities to influenza viruses in pigs, it became known as a “swine flu,” even though there is no evidence the virus spread between pigs or pigs to humans.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were about 60.8 million cases of infection with the novel type of influenza virus in the U.S. between April 2009 and April 2010, with a total of approximately 274,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths. While that death toll may sound high, it’s over an entire year and, in fact, ended up being far lower than was initially expected. The strain of influenza also turned out to have a case fatality rate of just 0.02%well below even many typical seasonal influenzas.

Everything that’s known about the new coronavirus so far suggests that it’s an entirely different beast than its most recent pandemic predecessor. Peter Jay Hotez, a professor and dean of the tropical medicine school at Baylor College of Medicine, told us that the new virus, which is known as SARS-CoV-2, is considerably more transmissible and more lethal than H1N1. For those reasons, he said, “the urgency to contain this coronavirus is so much greater than the H1N1 2009 one was.”

So if the death toll is over a year it isn’t bad?

Interesting analysis

The WHO data - which you quoted - says 132,000 infected globally with 5,000 deaths. That's close to 4% mortality, 50-100 times worse than flu.

I'm trying to understand your point. Are you assuming it won't infect many more people in the coming months?

European governments are expecting a majority of their people to be infected. At 4% mortality, that's well over a million dead in each of the major countries.

I'm going by the reported flu infections and deaths even with meds to fight it. I don't dispute the coronavirus is deadly in fact I'm in the real danger age zone. But let's not panic. Hell I'm seeing shortages from panic buying in areas that haven't seen a case anywhere near yet.

You compare us to how the cases have escalated in Italy and Germany and South Korea and get back to me.

Hint: Italy went from 3 cases to over 10,000 cases in 3 weeks. And Italy's is 1/5th of the US population.
Germany has had its cases jump from 2 to over 3000 in 13 days.

This is called "moving the goalposts." The discussion is about this country and trump's handling of the crisis. Your comment was "Trump saved many lives slowing this thing down." We don't know how many lives were saved or why until it's over. The graph shows that the virus is still very active here and cases are increasing every day.

If you want to talk about other countries maybe you should start a thread on them.

Hello Darth,

Always does lol.

Starts slow, picks up speed until it reaches a peak then drops back down. This one is either a slow starter or it’s going to have a shallow peak.

If I was a betting man I’d put my money on the latter.

The goal is to reduce the height of the peak by stretching it out over a longer period of time with smart social distancing measures. 60 to 70% of the population is getting this. We just don't want it all to happen at once so we can prevent overburdening our limited hospital capacity. Nations with universal healthcare have more hospital capacity than we do. Strict capitalism operates on the principle of supply and demand. It doesn't recognize a social need for additional supply in case demand suddenly increases. Capitalism is not the best system to use to have adequate health care for a pandemic.

Hello Thing1,

Not even a good tapdance.

Read back & see what I was querying. There is nothing that you posted that backs up that it's "easy" to believe Dems are hoping for millions of deaths.

Again - I'm very glad you cut in. Very glad.

I have noticed that many Republicans really struggle to identify how Democrats feel. They have a very difficult time simply listening to what people say. Instead, they want to make things up and then CLAIM that Democrats said it, or say: 'that's how they feel,' or some other BS for what it really is: Republicans simply putting words in Democrat's mouths.

Ya know, if Democrats were one tenth as horrible people as Republicans make them out to be it would be entirely understandable to oppose them! Heck, I would!

Ya know, if Democrats were one tenth as horrible people as Republicans make them out to be it would be entirely understandable to oppose them! Heck, I would!

But that's just not the case. Many Republicans live in a fantasy world of spin and propaganda. They really believe that Democrats are as bad as they say. They actually think there are masses of Americans who want America to fail. Or that they are so poorly informed and stupid that they want things that are simply impossible and will destroy freedom. That they mean well but they just don't understand, you know, because they are so stupid. Even though many of them went to college, they got taught the wrong things by stupid liberal college professors who are trying to destroy America.

Right. Like, all these people want their really cool home country to self-destruct. Right. What BS. People don't want that. That's ridiculous. Not real. Made up.

Democrats and Republicans actually have more in common than they disagree on, but they've forgotten to even think about the common interests. And there is so much money to be made in stoking that fire. I wish people would practice more self-restraint. Don't fall for click-bait. Remember how to sort out the facts from the hype. If two people disagree on a political issue, that is fine. That's the way it is supposed to be. Our country was actually designed to be that way. It doesn't mean that either one of them is a horrible person who needs to be personally attacked and blamed. It just means there are two different opinions on how to run the country, what the government should do.

And all Republicans are not deplorable. Hillary never said they were, and they aren't. The BS runs both ways. Even if somebody posts that on a page that doesn't make it true. We need to get past that.

You know, it's sad what we call political discussion here is mostly just personal attacks and blaming. The stuff of substance that I am here for? I'd say that is less than 5% of what is posted. I do spend quite a bit of time scrolling through pages of ignored posters. That's just sad. People can't even talk about a subject without getting all personal with one another.

Most of us don't have anything to do with it. We are not to blame for anything. We are just political junkies who want to talk about it. We are not the powerful who make the decisions. All we can do is try to stay informed and vote according to our senses. Maybe write a few pointless messages to representatives that we know are disregarded. Yeah, our politics is frustrating; yeah, we feel powerless. None of us have control over it but these big decisions affect our lives. I don't see why that's a reason we should try to take it out on one another.

Anyone: if you find yourself in a food fight with somebody else on a discussion board, and you suddenly get the feeling this is stupid, LISTEN TO THAT FEELING.

There is a better way.

Each of us has the power to find that for ourselves. You're not going to change the world. You should ask yourself what coming here means to YOU. It's not healthy to be in a habit of engaging in insult contests. Life does not have to be one shouting match after another. There is really a much nicer life out there for anyone who decides that's what they want. It's something nobody else can do for you. It's something you have to do for yourself. You just have to make up your mind to want it bad enough.

The more of us who drop those pretenses, the better the board will be. We know there are always going to be food fights. We just don't have to all participate.

We have no idea how many this virus will kill.

I have seen worst case scenarios, but I am withholding judgement until more information and data is forthcoming
Well there's a first!

Another lie concerning me. You are letting your decade long, unrelenting resentment and toxic hate cloud your perceptions of me.

By disposition and training I am not rash, I frequently have posted on here that I am not leaping to any premature conclusions and was waiting for more data to come to light --- even when the easy thing to do was to play armchair expert and take a cheap shot at Trump

Don Jr. started the whole "Dems want millions to die" thing, and of course, the minions run w/ it.

I have zero idea where it comes from. If I could make this virus end this minute, I would. I hate this.

I know. Don't mention it, darling Duchess. :loveu: :heavybreathing:

Proof is certainly in the pudding but modeling based on proper and reasonable assumptions of the virus behavior and human behavior is very useful.
If people don't take it seriously enough and don't socially distance and reduce travel and fail to wash more frequently then the worst scenarios will play out.
An array of results could obtain.

If you're not a health expert or you haven't studied viruses or illness or pandemics thoroughly & extensively: please stop.

There should be more testing.

There should be thousands of pending tests right now.

It's a major screw up.

This thing is exploding and we weren't ready.

The national emergency should have been declared 6 weeks ago.

Hello Thing1,

I have zero idea where it comes from. If I could make this virus end this minute, I would. I hate this.

Exactly what I have been saying. Since when should anybody ask Don Jr what Dems think? Why not just listen to what Dems are saying.

Or does that make too much sense.

Apparently it does, so never mind. Then they would just cherry pick the most extreme statement made by a suspected Dem and claim that's what the whole party wants.

It's useless.

It doesn't matter what Dems say. Many Republicans are going to simply ignore that and make up their own version and go with that. That guarantees nobody can argue with them, which is exactly what they want. A seemingly iron clad argument behind what they want to do. They are sure they are right, so just shut down any criticism. They are perfect, could not be in error, don't want to second guess it. Don't want another point of view. If one comes along, they will turn it into something easy to rip to shreds.
