I thought that the democrat party hated "regressive" taxes

Teflon Don

I'm back baby
That is what I keep hearing when it comes to tariffs.

"They are regressive"
"They hit the poor (and blacks, women and transgenders) the hardest"

So if the democrat party hates regressive taxes so much then why do so many democrat states impose regressive taxes?

Below are the top 10 highest per gallon gasoline taxes by state. Not surprisingly, the usual cast of characters bubble up to the top. Of the top ten, eight of them either are run completely by democrats (some with super majorities) or have a democrat at the highest office. Two of the states are run completely by Republicans

California – $0.698 – Democrats control everything
Illinois – $0.671 – Democrats control everything
Pennsylvania – $0.587 - Democrat governor
Indiana – $0.561 – Republicans control everything
Michigan – $0.468 – Democrats control everything
Maryland – $0.461 – Democrats control everything
New Jersey – $0.449 – Democrats control everything
North Carolina – $0.404 – Democrat governor
Washington – $0.389 – Democrats control everything
Florida – $0.394 – Republicans control everything

Think about this. After factoring in expenses (transportation, utilities, maintenance), the net profit per gallon for a convenience store owner may be only $0.01 to $0.03 cents. And here you have the state of Commiefornia "profiting" by almost $.70/gallon when they do absolutely nothing with regards to getting gasoline in someone's tank. And not surprisingly, Commiefornia has the highest cost per gallon of gasoline of any other state which means over and above the taxation they are imposting other costs.

Now why would these democrat run states be imposing such high regressive taxes on their people?

Any JPP Marxist care to wander into the waters? I really hope one of them tries to gaslight us and tell us that gasoline taxes aren't really regressive.

I'm "right" on some things, "left" on others. I'd think the answer to your question is that democrats are much more into seeing using a lot of gas as a bad thing. They want people to use things like electric cars, which I'm not in favour of. I have read that there are better technologies that are being suppressed:

are you suggesting that higher taxes gives you less of something? That the democrat party is using high gas taxes not as a revenue source but as a means to get people to not use gasoline motors (the most efficient on the market today)?

First off, the source would have been helpful

Second, you are improperly collating tariffs and taxes. A regressive income tax is what critics label as tough on the poor, it is, which is why we have a proportional income tax. A tariff is a fee on imports that importers pay, which often winds up as an operational cost that they pass on to the consumer. If you do not want to pay the cost, you don’t by the product, it is if anything an expenditure tax

Other than income, State Tax is usually a consumption tax, which States will use as a source of income, and, often to redirect behavior. They are usually regressive, effecting how one chooses to spend their income, but they are not income taxes, ratner mandatory taxes. Many of the States you cited have large metro areas where driving vehicles is discouraged due to congestion and pollution

I never once mentioned the word "income" did I?

But, I am glad to see that your side does in fact support "regressive" taxes and that you concede that gasoline taxes are regressive and that taxes are used to discourage behavior.

That was a lot for a marxist like you to concede in one post. I wonder if you even knew you were doing it?

They support it if it serves a purpose, but not in general as with an income tax, which is where the description regressive is usually applied, obviously those States mentioned feel it does
