I dont understand why so many do not want to address the real problem?

One thing that could be done.......UNPLUG.

The left LOVES the idea of pricing things out of the market as a way of modifying behavior. Ok fine,......lets have cable tv, internet access, and cell phone data use carry an astronomical cost to it. I actually HATE this sort of thing as a free market guy. Tell you what though. Wouldnt be long and we would have a much healthier and happier society.

Why not make guns and ammo more expensive? Make owners carry insurance as well.

Make ammo pay for these crimes

Make it cost prohibitive

Then those tax dollars are given to the victims

Why dont people want to address the root problem which is WHAT drives a person like Ramos to pick up a weapon and kill children ? What caused a Black Supremacist domestic terrorist like Darrel E Brooks to run down all those people, children included , at the Christmas massacre in Waukesha? Dylan Roof shooting all those people IN CHURCH? On and on and on. Would stricter gun laws help? Maybe,...but I doubt it. They would simply use a knife, a car, a bomb like the Jihadists in Boston did, ect ect ect. The actual root cause is what needs to be addressed.

Why are you so sure that the issues being discussed right now by the LW's (as you call them), Stone, ARE NOT THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM?

"The problem" as I see it...is the very high number of shootings in schools and other public places...and the "cause" most often suggested by the LW's is the extraordinarily high number of guns and ammunition in the hands of people all over our country.

That seems a reasonable fit to me.

LOTS of guns...LOTS of ammunition...and LOTS of shootings.

Do you suppose that to be merely a coincidence?

So, I ask again...why do you suppose that the availability of all those guns and ammo is not the root cause of the many shootings?

I already KNOW how I would address it and have spoken about it in detail. I want to know how the board LWers would address it. Im talking root cause here,...not guns. HOW do you guys address it?

I would address it with a comprehensive mental health program, school, parental and police referrals into a system that both treats and monitors individuals with such problems. Right now, if parents or grandparents need help, there are very limited places to turn for any meaningful care.

Turning back is impossible, moving forward is the only option, and there are good things about the change we have made, as well as bad.

Again I say....ROOT CAUSE is what I am looking for here. What is THE CAUSE of the insanity and how can we stop it? Or are we going to pass more legislation on cars, pressure cookers, knives, bats and clubs.

There are probably a dozen root causes here. I can only begin to speculate, but instead of playing politics, DC should put together a think tank of the best minds in psychology, technology, education, et al. to look at this thing holistically.

This is the 1st generation we have that has been completely immersed in the internet. I 100% think that is a factor. It's a knee-jerk to blame parents & often not warranted, but in general, we're not a good society when it comes to rearing & educating children. Counseling and anti-bullying programs at schools need to be more robust and comprehensive.

We also need all hands on deck. We live in a different world now - EVERYONE has to be vigilant. We need to get immediate help for people who are giving off any hint that they're capable of something like this, or motivated to act out in negative ways.

We have to change our mindset completely.

The root cause is that healthcare is too expensive for average Americans to use on a regular basis. Most of us can't afford annual check ups to stave off disease rather than treat it long after it's gotten worse. Same with dental care. Too damn expensive so most wait until their teeth are falling out of their heads. Same with mental healthcare. Therapy is too damn expensive and what little is given is usually focused on handing out drugs. The easy solution.

Make healthcare affordable so we can stave off disease, mental or physical, long before it gets to the point of being truly dangerous.

Can anyone dispute this?

what is there to dispute? you are just one of the billions that have an opinion and latch onto anything that will lend credence to your opinion or desire

you hate technology so much, you think the rest of society will be happy with your authoritarian view that we can't do stuff you don't agree with. you won't put a boot on my neck, you will just artificially price it out of existence. and usher in a new utopia

Because normal people could be in a room filled to the ceiling with guns and ammo and it STILL wouldnt cause them to go out and shoot a bunch of people. Or shoot anyone for that matter.

Just like talkies were new when Hitler began to use its power to gain power

Evil does evil

We have a new terrain

Evil is using it

Idiots and dupes can’t tell truth from lies

No.... re read what I said. I said I actually HATE those sort of things. Go look at the post. I did however say that if people unplugged we would end up with a much healthier and happier society.

And 4 in 10 have always been sociopaths

And making it easy for them to kill passels of humans in seconds is stupid

Let’s melt down the guns that do that

There are a lot of murder cases that are referred to as crimes of passion because right up until you do it...you would never have imagined doing it. Even the most benign non violent people have their last straw and you just never know what it will be.

EXCELLENT post Bartender.

Root cause remember? WHAT is CAUSING the massive uptick in mental health problems?
Our society is not massively unique and different from many other developed nations.

The legislative and voting history of Republicans unequivocally shows they will neither support reasonable restrictions on high capacity ammunition magazines, nor will they vote to increase funding and universal availability of mental health services.
