I have a Doctor friend that was into Whitewater Kayaking he would go down to South America and go off of waterfalls and very dangerous rapids. He ended up getting trapped in a hydraulic and very nearly drowned and lost his kayak . That really shook him up. Then about a month later his kayaking buddy drowned in a hydraulic and that made my friend quit the sport. He is an ER doctor in South Carolina today.

Looking back, I’m lucky to have survived.
My last time out I broke my femur on a submerged boulder (pain scale - 10) after having to bail and that was it for me.

Hydrolics are scary as hell. At first you panic and try to swim upward and quickly realize it’s hopeless. Then you remember from having educated yourself (hopefully) that the only way out is to swim down where the flow spits you out. Happened also.

When I was taking organic chemistry there was a black premed student that was doing poorly. I offered to let him join our study group. He told me that if they wanted black doctors they would have to accept him even if he didn't do well in organic chemistry. He declined to join our study group because he wanted to go skiing instead. He flunked the exam. The Asian students always were in the student group in fact we studied from their class notes because they were always excellent.

When my daughter was in premed, she called organic chemistry "Orgo" and said it was extremely challenging. She did ace it though.
