Death by Corona numbers explode to 61

The current number is 157.

And it will climb. There’s a lot of speculation about how far it will climb [I’ll leave that to the partisans] but 157 is still a modest number in a country this size *and if gets to 10,000* it will still be a modest number given that it’s a pandemic.

How’s that?

You're doing a fine job there, AntiCassandra.

To tell you how fast it will climb, at 7:21pm Darth Omar wrote, the number dead is 157. At 10:16pm, the number dead was 218.

Sadly, the cat is out of the bag, and we have a new swine flu from Oct -May every year to add to all the others. If we make an effective vaccine
then our annual death toll will be 30,000 dead. If we don't, sky is the limit. We have NO vaccine yet.

We are in iron lung land. Govern your actions accordingly.

You realize 30,000 deaths from the seasonal flu—is on the high end, but it’s not an outlandish number, right lol?

Hello Darth,

What if it gets to 100,000 or a mil?

What we would like to know is:

How many deaths will it take till he knows...

That too many people have died?

Hello Darth,

Those numbers are about to explode.

The confirmed reports are only a fraction of the actual, and we are about to finally get the testing capacity we needed 6 weeks ago.

As soon as the full testing capacity comes online we are likely to see a huge spike in the reported numbers.

Bu...bu...but it's no worse than the flu! /sarasm

217 deaths

Is it really unrealistic to predict 500-600 by next Friday?

As a matter of academic interest, I'm curious to see the ratio of extreme LWers and extreme RWers who'll disappear for a few days if not forever before Cinco de Mayo.

My theory is that those who are the most hateful, most bitter and the oldest will be the hardest hit.

Only a few countries (normal capitalist or, in US terms 'socialist' ones mostly) have any notion of how many of their people have caught the norvid19 - that was the problem in Italy, for instance, but we do know that certain groups like those with diabetes, those taking drugs that reduce resistance for various conditions and certain others are going to die in much larger numbers than they would have done in normal conditions. I quite see that gun-toting, 'shoot-'em all-down-and-who-cares-how-many American rightists won't be bothered who dies as long as it is not their sacred selves, but most people who still belong to the human species tend to take the issue rather seriously.

Thanks, but I won't be using that link anymore. My Firefox browser blocked a 'fingerprinter' on that site, fyi...

I fear so.

I doubt that is realistic, except the 'oldest' part.

....I doubt that is realistic, except the 'oldest' part.

There's science behind it:
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/articles/200309/smile-away-the-flu
Neurologists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have found a link between the body's immune response and a positive attitude. Their conclusion: Happy people heal faster.

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/magazine/happiness-stress-heart-disease/
A vast scientific literature has detailed how negative emotions harm the body. Serious, sustained stress or fear can alter biological systems in a way that, over time, adds up to “wear and tear” and, eventually, illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Chronic anger and anxiety can disrupt cardiac function by changing the heart’s electrical stability, hastening atherosclerosis, and increasing systemic inflammation....

...Some public health professionals contend that the apparent beneficial effects of positive emotions do not stem from anything intrinsically protective in upbeat mind states, but rather from the fact that positive emotions mark the absence of negative moods and self-destructive habits. Kubzansky and others disagree. They believe that there is more to the phenomenon—and that scientists are only beginning to glean the possible biological, behavioral, and cognitive mechanisms....

There’s also evidence that happiness can have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and immune systems, influence hormones and inflammation levels and speed wound healing. It’s even been linked to longer telomeres, protein caps on the end of chromosomes that get shorter with age. Although there are only a few studies on this topic and more research is needed, “the findings are promising in offering a direct tie from psychological well-being to aging and health at the cellular level,” the authors wrote.

A spike in reported numbers will not increase the death rate.. just sayin'. If we find out that there are 100's of thousands of cases in the US and only 61 deaths then we should revisit our panic and maybe tamp it down a bit.

This all begins and ends with the mortality rate.

We should have a good handle on it, fairly soon.
