The number in serious / critical has dropped, but that is because a lot of them died. over 2200 deaths just yesterday.

But that doesn't mean it's gone, doesn't mean it is safe.
Being past the peak is meaningless if the Active Cases have not dropped.
The number of Active Cases represent the known minimum number of people who are carrying the virus and can spread it to others.
And there are most likely more.
28 Million Americans carry the potentially lethal disease. Many of them got it because they are not careful caring people who were trying to prevent transmission. They didn't protect themselves and they are not going to protect you. If you do not wish to get this, the responsibility falls upon you.
You cannot trust your life to others. Other people do not care if you get this and they do not care if you die from it.
We have heard the arguments. Irresponsible people who do not want to comply will come up with every reason they can think of to not comply. They will casually dismiss the lives of others without so much as a single further thought. They can't be bothered to keep distance, wear a mask or get vaccinated. They do not want to be told what to do. They think freedom means being free to spread deadly disease.
We could have largely shut this down already if everyone did the right thing.
