Corona Virus Peak Watch Thread

150000-deaths.png

Hello Darth,

Political agendas aside, the virus is gonna virus to a large extent.

How are the hospitals holding up?

So far, most of them are keeping up with our irresponsibility. Some are struggling. Many have expanded ICU capacity in response.

We had a discussion at just how much death there is at the beginning of this month.

On July 4th, we passed 400 deaths per million.

Look at how much that has grown since then. All too soon we will be at 500 deaths per million.

These are not numbers we can easily just BS away. These are serious numbers, calling for a serious response.

We blow this off at our own expense. The Pandemic is what is keeping the economy from bouncing back. There's no short cut here. If we want our economy back we have to seriously deal with the pandemic. They cannot be separated. The longer the right holds out and tries to ignore this and blow it off, the longer it will be until we get our economy back.

Why is it that liberals can see this so plainly, but it is so elusive for so many on the right?

Why can’t Democrat’s plainly see that including ‘died with COVID’ inflates the death count?

At any rate, I was more interested in the hospitals since the stats are dubious. I posted a link from the Miami-Dade tracker which shows ICU’s that region are only running 2/3rds full.

Not too bad, considering. Surely, you don’t advocate them closing back down over that, do you?

What percentage of the death count are you claiming is inflated? What do you consider "inflated"? Florida has over 460,000 cases and over 6500 deaths from COVID. What percentage are you claiming are not COVID deaths? One mistake, which was corrected, doesn't change the deaths of over 6500 Floridians. “DR. DEBORAH BIRX: So, I think in this country we've taken a very liberal approach to mortality.

There are other countries that if you had a preexisting condition and let's say the virus caused you to go to the ICU and then have a heart or kidney problem some countries are recording as a heart issue or a kidney issue and not a COVID-19 death. Right now we are still recording it and we will I mean the great thing about having forms that come in and a form that has the ability to market as COVID-19 infection the intent is right now that those if someone dies *with* COVID-19 we are counting that as a COVID-19 death”. Thanks for the link from last April 8th. What was Trump saying about that time?

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-repeats-coronavirus-will-go-away/
President Trump on Tuesday said the coronavirus is "going to go away," repeating a line he's said in the past that contradicts his own health experts. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the administration's leading infectious diseases expert, has said the deadly virus will not disappear, and the U.S. should be prepared for another wave in fall.

Mr. Trump, making the remarks in an East Room event with businesses that turned into a press conference, said a vaccine is looking promising, but he thinks the virus is going to go away, and if it does return in a "modified" form in fall the U.S. will handle it.

CBS News White House correspondent Ben Tracy asked, "Mr. President, you said at the top of your remarks that you feel the worst of the pandemic is behind us. But without a treatment, without a vaccine, and states now reopening, how can you be so sure?"

The president responded: "Well I think that like other things, we're going to hopefully we're going to come up with a vaccine, you never know about a vaccine, but tremendous progress has been made. Johnson & Johnson and Oxford and lots of good things, you've been hearing the same things as I do. Tremendous progress has been made, we think, on a vaccine. You always have to say think and then you have to test it, and that takes a period of time. But uh, a lot of movement and a lot of progress has been made on a vaccine. But I think what happens is it's going to go away. This is going to go away. And whether it comes back in a modified form in the fall, we'll be able to handle it, we'll be able to put out spurts, and we're very prepared to handle it. We've learned a lot, we've learned a lot about it, the invisible enemy."

It isn't exactly clear from the president's remarks when he thinks the virus will go away.

Mr. Trump said on February 27 he though the virus would "disappear" like a "miracle. There were only 60 confirmed cases in the U.S. at the time of that remarks. He also stood by the claim that the virus would go away on April 3, when there were 273,880 cases.

That's not 2/3 of their normal capacity.

That is 2/3 of their EXPANDED capacity.

It is absurd to look at somebody who is high-risk with preexisting health conditions, who gets COVID-19 and then dies of complications, and claim the pandemic had nothing to do with their death. Sure, they may have been more susceptible, but if they didn't get COVID-19, they would still be alive. Of COURSE that death should be part of the statistics.

It's not like talking about it in a different way suddenly brings them back to life...

Dead is dead.

Look at a united country with good leadership (such as Taiwan, and their 7 deaths total, same population size as Florida with 6500 deaths,) and how they handle the pandemic; and compare that to our divided country with poor leadership and the differences are stark. We can not allow people the freedom to decide for themselves if they want to take this seriously and expect to have good results when clearly a unified approach is more effective.

Are you saying the difference between 7 and 6500 is because of the way the deaths are counted?

Arguing about how the pandemic deaths are counted? That's like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

#deflection

I don’t care when it was said, Dr. Birx said ‘died with COVID’ deaths were being added to our counts when it wasn’t being done in other countries. If this was some sort of global competition they would rightfully accuse us of cheating.

It may be a conspiracy or it may not be. Let’s call it ‘fishy’ and stop at that. Though when it involves government bureaucracy you can never rule out incompetence.

Care to speculate why—without dragging Trump into it?

Obviously you don't know that Trump is the President and Dr. Birx's boss.

You claimed the COVID deaths were deliberately faked. That, by definition, is a conspiracy to present false information to the American public. Since Birx works for Trump, I'm asking you who is heading up this conspiracy of yours?

Arguing about how the pandemic deaths are counted? That's like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Again with Birx: she stated we are doing something with our death counts that no other country does. She explained it a long the lines as someone gets COVID but their weak kidneys give out while in the hospital. Other countries don’t count that as a COVID death.

This isn’t a trivial point when 40% of COVID deaths involve nursing home patients and/or frail elderly. How many end stage renal failure patients died ‘from COVID’ because they couldn’t get dialysis while they were in ICU *with COVID*? That’s just one example.

Late stage Alzheimer’s patients/residents are often critically ill [to be blunt—they’re getting ready to die] and some no doubt got COVID and died. From COVID? Well yeah, you can argue that but some would argue that it ‘kind of misses the point’.

With so many deaths happening in a population where the average life expectancy is 12 months-ish—there’s plenty of room for ‘interpretation’ when categorizing cause of death—for lack of a better way of putting it.

And Dr Birx said ‘we are taking a liberal approach to mortality’ that other countries aren’t.

The question is why?

You have Trump on the brain lol.

My claim is they are being *mis-counted* and I quoted the person right behind the Great Doctor Fauci.

I’m waiting for someone to explain it. It’s raining and I have all day.

America has the highest virus death-rate on earth. All over the world, nations that have tried to send people out and back into unsafe situations have gone into reverse. The virus is winning.

Hello Darth,

Can anyone explain Dr Birx's statement and are they or are they not adding died with COVID to the totals?

Gladly. Read on:

Again with Birx: she stated we are doing something with our death counts that no other country does. She explained it a long the lines as someone gets COVID but their weak kidneys give out while in the hospital. Other countries don’t count that as a COVID death.

And Dr Birx said ‘we are taking a liberal approach to mortality’ that other countries aren’t.

The question is why?

That is all fine and well, but you have completely ignored my argument.

Taiwan and Florida have roughly the same population size, around 20 million people.

Taiwan has 7 deaths total, and Florida has 6500 deaths.

That difference cannot all be attributed to your point of different counting methods.

If you think that 40% of COVID-19 deaths are wrongly attributed to the disease then let us, for argument's sake, accept that. Let's reduce the 6500 Florida deaths by 40%.

100% - 40% = 60%.

60% of the Florida 6500 deaths is:

0.6 * 6500 = 3900.

Florida has 3900 'actual' COVID-19 deaths compared to Taiwan's 7 deaths.

The difference is because we have poor leadership and we are not unified in our response.

Trump lied and people died.
