Still over 700 a day dying? Are all or most of those antivaxxers? Less than 3000 dead Americans to go before making an even One Million Dead Americans thanks to #45 fucking up the COVID response.

3000/700 ~ 4.3 days to one million American deaths. Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

Hello Dutch,

Still over 700 a day dying? Are all or most of those antivaxxers? Less than 3000 dead Americans to go before making an even One Million Dead Americans thanks to #45 fucking up the COVID response.

Yes, it appears the million dead Americans figure will be official next week in this tabulation from Worldometer.

We won't hear about it in the US news for another month or so. They tend to use the Johns Hopkins tabulation, which lags behind Worldometer in confirmed US deaths. Johns Hopkins currently lists the figure as 970,806. PBS Newshour reported last night that Americans are still dying at a rate of 1000 per day average. That would be about 29 days to the million figure at that rate.

It is encouraging that there are only 3,362 in ICUs across the country, but it is troubling to realize that the figure represents a rotation of people coming in, and those leaving. Leaving, one way or another. Since 1000 are dying each day, and they are largely coming from ICUs, that means close to a 1000 per day are entering ICUs.

The unvaccinated still dominate those figures.

We are running ICUs all over the country primarily to deal with a constant influx of fools who refused to get vaccinated. Some recover; but for most it is a one-way trip. Regretting the dumbest mistake of a lifetime while gasping for air for an extended period. What a lousy way to go.

It'll take a few years to assess the data, but my guess is that history won't be kind to US leadership in how our nation reacted to a pandemic.

Hello Dutch,

It'll take a few years to assess the data, but my guess is that history won't be kind to US leadership in how our nation reacted to a pandemic.

It was so botched in the beginning that the rest of the ordeal ever since has been strongly negatively impacted. Back in the beginning there was an opportunity to get out in front of it, which was sabotaged by a self-aggrandizing ego. The initial Trump denials that it was even a problem, coupled with the bizarre attempt by the CDC to create our own testing methods instead of using what the WHO already had going, essentially gave away more than a month of time to the virus to spread freely undetected in our country. And during that whole time, Trump issuing bizarre statements like "15 going to zero," and that it would be "gone by Easter" just absolutely split the country and set up the battle lines of left and right over pandemic response.

Even after it became apparent that Trump's early approach was total BS, he made it worse with his nonsense about refusing mask wearing, hydroxychloroquine and injesting disinfectant. Later on, when the vaccines were nearing readiness, he messed that all up by trying to rush the program to completion before election day, thus imparting great doubt into the safety of the vaccines, then afterward, refusing to endorse their use, even as he himself was secretly vaccinated. A fictional script writer would be hard-pressed to come up with a more shocking story than the actual reality. (Don't Look Up)

It is unimaginable that we could have had a worse leader to handle the initial pandemic response. By the time Trump left office, New Cases were running dangerously close to one million per day. It never had to be that bad. Never had to be that bad at all. The situation was an absolute shambles by the time President Biden took office.

Pretty soon we will drop below 23 million active cases, and 3,000 Serious and Critical cases.

Good for us.

We are doing well in the USA right now.

OK, today's data was a bit surprising. The number of Active Cases dropped by around 5000 in one day!

We were wondering when it would drop below 23 million, and then all of a sudden now it's 17 million.

I checked the Worldometer notes and found this:

"Recovered estimates have been updated for the entire states of California and Texas based on the data received by the counties which have continued to provide daily reports on total recoveries."

Right on!

It did seem like that number was remaining agonizingly high...

Let's get ALL those numbers down.

Enjoy the respite while you can.

Daily new cases have not been this low since early August last year.

Following that, the Delta variant wave once again filled ICUs.
